Group Breaks and their deadlines

Remember to keep your team in the baseball break you must pay by 9am tomorrow. Also, remember you can sign up for the Bowman's Best Break and save a couple bucks.

Football group break signup deadline is coming up. $65 bucks a slot, pick one of your teams. 5 boxes leaf limited, 1 National Treasures. 6 slots left.

2006 Leaf Limited

Fail! One hit per pox. Blowout special was $30 last week but normally run closer to $40. Why does everyone tell each other how great their breaks were when they were clearly hosed? Some of the poeple give honest feedback though. Contrast 2006 with 2008. 2008 runs $95 2.25X the price, but you get 4+ hits per box. Don't get me wrong there are some crappy boxes out there but at least you have a shot. Plus, the crappy hits in 2008 only cost you $24 each instead of $40. No way some of these cards bring $10

Check out some breaks. Here, here, the wayne is ok but close to $30?, here here here here (AJ Hawk, decent hit) here

Listen, I know opening wax is a gamble, but this was supposed to be pretty high end. One pack $40? Meh. Kevin Kolb like players are everywhere. Just no value here. By the case only.

2006 Topps Finest Football Box 5

Don't forget the Baseball Break here and the 5 2008 Leaf Limited Football and 1 2008 National Treasures Group Break here.

Now on to the break
Brett Favre Blue Xfractor- These cards are kind of useless. What's the point?
Blue X
D-Brick is the poster child for including linemen of any type into your auto checklist. Pop quiz: name 5 HOF O or D Lineman ok now name 10 QB's. Which one took you longer

Missed the Gint-a-cuffs sign up but..

two boxes will be up shortly in addition to the group break. Got a good price.

Group breaks

10 spots left in the football group break,, pick your team the other is randomly assigned to you.

Monthly baseball break you have until august 1 at 9 am or your team gets opened to first come first served.

Ridiculously Rising Box Prices Mystery Solved?

Its because of the National. Just like gas prices go up before Memorial Day and Labor Day, boy prices are going up because of the National. Prime cuts up over 50%, National Treasures too, Finest. All of the increases are inexplicable and this is the only way to describe it. Is it so Blowout and DA can sell a bunch by reducing their prices. Its like when you go to a liquidation sale and you notice that the signs say 40% off but they are more expensive then when the store was in business.

Circuit City did this. MSRP is $1000, Regular price was $699 but you could get it for $599. Now the store is 25% off everything and the price is $750. Just a thought.

Card shop update

No, I didn't forget or back out. I figured it was about time to let everyone know what's going on. My dad was going to retire in October and I was going to have him run the shop. He was going to sell coins as well. Back in June, he was laid off, that delayed his retirement plans and thus my shop timeline. I can put the shop together in 3 months as far as inventory and location. Just to clarify, the time frame has slid a bit, but I am still planning on it. The financials aren't an issue, but timing is everything.

Maybe Upper Deck should have left 2009/10 Draft as cancelled

Check out this case break.

A couple of boxes here.

Talk about really shitty breaks. Wouldn't surprise me if this guy didn't get half his money back on that case.

Upper Deck has really been pushing the envelope lately with crappy products that cost way too much for what you get. In all fairness this is a draft product so you expect a lot of no names, but if you don't get a Lebron, Jordan, Kobe, or Blake Griffin you aren't getting much if anything.

Consider some of the other Products: Black (all of them), Football Signature (soon to be released), Premier, and Ultimate Collection. $100+ a pack, one or two hits, $200+ for Black, and you get about half that on a good day. That Derrick Rose auto didn't even get those boxes back for him. How many case breaks of Black have you seen where something was pulled that really did well. I'm not saying the cards aren't out there, but good lord that case of Draft stunk up the joint. Let us not forget this. Also look at this break, yup the guy pulled a Jordan in Box 4 pack 2, but what about those other 3 boxes? Those are some shitty cards for $220 a box. Say that Jordan goes for $1000 - $1500 notice the one $999 BIN, he has $880 into those 4 boxes. Lucky he pulled it. What if would have been a simple jordan or Lebron auto? Plus, you know that was the case hit. Even with a pull like that you are still down for the case.

Exquisite is a push in my opinion, box for box there is some good stuff if not for sale on ebay there are some cool cards. However this other stuff often yields things that would be better served being placed into a bargain bin. Look at some of those breaks. With very few exceptions none of that stuff would find its way into my collection. Too generic looking. Heck 07/08 Fleer Ultra Basketball at $35 is a much better break.

Some would say that I am being too harsh because everyone knows you don't get back what you put into a case. My answer to that is that many people buy this stuff to flip. There should be no scrub autos in this high end stuff. Heck, half the time you can buy a box of SP authentic for less and end up with 3 hits, one of them pretty good, whereas, some of these breaks are pure shit or names that you may know but there is no demand for.

I am working on a comparison of extremely high end to a high-mid product. In my opinion the high-mid crushes the high end hands down. By the way, 2009 Topps Football looks pretty good this year. I am questioning whether Topps has inadvertently pushed chrome out of the market. Those Jumbos with 1-2 autos and a manu letter are much more appealing to me than 1 crap auto and some refractors. Finest still has a place but there is no need for anything in between. I realize Chrome is wildly popular, not with me mind you.

One last note on these. The condition that these cards come out of the pack is absolutely unacceptable. Look at some of those scans, especially the Ultimate Foursomes card in that "shitty breaks" link. I know that Steve from The sports card file rages everytime someone mentions something outlandish like putting the big hits in cases as too expensive, but good god, at $100 for a couple of cards we deserve something. Maybe that's the problem, as an industry insider these individuals have their own biases and don't listen to the customer. Maybe that is why their sales are sitting around $250 million and not $2 billion. On that topic, Rob from Voice of the Collector commented to them that he hated all the scrub autos and that he didn't understand why undrafted free agents make it into these products. Scooby and Steve basically tried to make Rob feel like an idiot for suggesting that these guys should not be in the product because these products were planned out months in advance. To that I say fuck you. There was no way that 90% of those free agent undrafted guys could have been in anyone's mock draft. If so they were in very late rounds and shouldn't have been considered for the product. I would rather have 1/2 to 2/3's the hit rate if the autos were better quality. No defensive guy except for maybe a LB, CB or Safety should be included if they are past the first round maybe mid second. OL and DL should not be considered unless they are top 16.

For example, everyone knew Crabtree, Stafford, Sanchez, and those guys were going to be top picks. I wouldn't even mind the errant WR, QB, or RB, but a checklist of 100 rookies is 50 too many, an auto checklist of more than the first round is too many. Wait until mid way through the season, it will be clear by then which guys are going to make it and which ones won't. Heck a lot of these products aren't even released until after the season. /rant

Outside of a pure draft product the following is how I would have stacked the auto checklist. Everyone in the first 2 rounds gets a card in the set. Y for yes n for no. I would probably do redemptions perhaps 10 for standout rookies and second years after I evaluate after week 4 or 6. Seems a 10 card set would be very easy to put together. Maybe not with the eleventy billion products each company puts out each year.

2008-09 Rookie Threads Basketball pack 4

Pack 4? Anyway, another free pack.

I decided to not video this one because I was busting a bunch of other stuff at the same time. Now I wish I would have.

No base cards

/11 Really you couldn't auto this card. There are only 11 of them for pete's sake.

Another note. Given the price of wax right now, I am taking a bit of a break from buying new wax. I still have a few more boxes to post and will still be doing the monthly box busters, but wax is stupid expensive right now. If I happen to run into a deal I might pick it up, but I am not actively seeking things out right now. Blowout had Magic for $65 over the weekend, if it hits $50 I will pick some up same with icons football, mayo, murad, finest anything, masterpieces. BTW, with a couple of exceptions, I will no longer purchase boxes with sticker autos. Leaf Limited might be the exception or if I find some 2008 Donruss products for under $50.

SP Authentic, Masterpieces, heroes, Mayo, and Ginter are all hard signed so there is no real need to branch out from there. This might seem a bit inconsistent but there is a method to my madness.

Reminder. Today is the 27th and the 1st is fast approaching, please pay for your slots before 9am PST to keep your team(s).

The best comment ever about Book Value

Regardless of the actual argument that was going on and whether you agree or disagree of the value of the card.

Well, if one just sold last April for $50 and one just sold for $25, WITH A SMUDGED AUTO, than I would say that the book value of $100 is appropriate. Cards generally bring anywhere from 25-50% of high book, and that is what that Mills SPA auto/99 has been bringing.

So, when I first stated that the card had a book value of $100, it was a valid comment, because the card is bringing a normal percentage of what a typical card brings...

Wow, just wow. You are saying that book value is correct if the card actually sells for 25-50% of that value? Shouldn't the book value reflect the actual value of the card? That is so illogical. How is that appropriate? Someone picks up a Beckett to find out what they could reasonably expect to pay or conversely sell a card for, in this case $100. The card actually brings $25-$50. How could one expect book value to carry any weight?

By that logic Beckett should find actual sale prices on cards and either double or quintuple them to get the book price? You realize that is what you are saying.

2006 Topps Finest Football Box 4

I hadn't got around to picking anymore of these up in the last few months. I have complained a lot about fluctuating box prices and Topps Finest Football is one of those products. Nothing particularly noteworthy about the set. Lots of good rookies but the odds are long to pull a bush, young, williams, etc. I do like this set and the refractors are nice. When I bought 3 boxes 7 or so months ago they were $60 a box, they shot up to $70 or more and then they dropped back down to $60 and I picked up 3.

The Refractors:
You get one Favre card per mini box. I would rather have a regular refractor than one of these.

The autos:
And finally
Thanks Topps! an expired redemption! Topps promised me 3 autos not 2 autos and a redemption. The redemption period just isn't long enough on these and a product like finest should be redemption free or good for a few years. Kellen Clemens is a local player, I would have been pretty happy with this card too. We should sue and class action their ass for this.

2008 NFL Season in retrospect a look ahead to 2009

I happen to be watching the NFC Championship game on NFL Network and a couple things came to mind. First, those morons at 18to88 embarrass themselves and their family with their "analysis". They throw out useless stats that mean shit. DVOA? and look how accurate the DVOA was here. If you recall the game came down to a bad playcall by the 49ers and a massive stop by the defense. The 29-24 score may not look like a lot of difference between 31-17 but in reality there was a ton. I guess one great thing about DVOA is that if you screw it up one week you can continue to change it the next and eventually you will get a result that fits. This just in, nobody would guess that the Lions will lose to the Steelers, but the DVOA is sure of it. Without DVOA I would have told people they were crazy. Of course the damn stat is right part of the time.

They also throw out that Manning has more wins in cold temperatures than Warner. No shit sherlock. Manning is in the AFC North Antarctic Division while Warner has spent his career in a dome and Arizona in the NFC West. You know those stats. In Baseball people throw out OBSCR, WHIPSMCKR, and other crap. Yeah, show me record, ERA and K's and I am good. In football Completion percentage, yards, TD's Int's and more importantly wins. Here is a stat for you: Warner has been to three Superbowls and has had the lead or tied in the last minute in all 3 even though he is 1-2. He holds the top three passing yard performances in Super Bowl history.

Second, Warner QB'd the best half of Football in Playoff history. With 3 minutes to go in the half, Warner was 10-11 3 TD's 170yds?. Larry Fitzgerald was playing out of his mind. I haven't seen a WR that dominated games like that since Rice. Oh yeah and he broke Rice's post season Yards mark. Warner's rating was perfect. He still ended up 21-28 278 4 TD's no picks and a rating of 145.7. One cannot over estimate the importnace of that first half. Regardless of the Eagles comeback, that game would have been over for the. His rating was 112 in the Super Bowl by the way He had 11 Td's and 3 picks, almost a 4-1 ratio. What really made the difference was Warner's ground game in the playoffs. He had 8 rushes for 1 yard. You read that right, he dominated with his legs.

Here is a third FYI, No NFL team has won a playoff game with the worst running game in the league, the cards won 3 and damn near pulled off a 4th.

Call me a Warner homer if you like. He took the Cardinals, the Cardinals for Christ sake to the superbowl. The Cardinals!

Everyone wants to know whether the Cardinals will be able to repeat this year. Fitzgerald has been working out like a mad man and now he has ridiculous confidence. Boldin and Breaston are still there as well. All went over 1000 yds last year. At the TE spot, Leonard Pope is in his 4th year, along with a host of others. That's where the Cardinals shine is the production they get from all of their role players. The Cards drafted B Wells out of Ohio St. and would expect them to feature Hightower, Doucett III, and Wells early in the season to see what they can do.

The defense is young but grew up during the playoffs. Rolle and Rodger Cromartie are just a year better with a ton of playoff experience. The big question is up the middle on both offense and defense. There is a new Defensive Coordinator this year as well. The draft was almost all defense.

Overall, if Warner stays healthy, the Cards will probably win the West. No guarantees for the playoffs. The first 4 games of the season will tell the story though. SF, jacksonville, Indy and Houston, if the Cards come out of that 2-2 or 3-1 they will be fine. Expect loses in 3, 7, 9, 12, 13, and 17. 8-8 or 9-7 is what I expect unless the defense goes ape shit. That's always possible.

More box price complaining

I realize that blowout and DA have sales and the prices are eventually going to go up, but box prices have been swinging wildly in the last month. 2008 masterpieces baseball is perhaps one of the worst breaks out there at retail price. You get 1 auto and 1 jersey per box. The product is littered with crappy autos and single color jerseys. There are 2 patches per case with the chance of an auto. The set is pretty easy to build and singles are cheap on the bay, yet I have seen prices as low as $35 and as high as $60 in the last couple of weeks. Was there a run on Masterpieces that I was not aware of? I commented on Finest Baseball prices previously.

For the group break I did, I paid $625 for the case, less than $80 a box. Now they are upward of $100 each shipped. 1 redemption that will be worthless in a year and two manu patch autos that will probably suffer the same fate. Refractors are nice but again cheap in lots. I am not aware of any stellar hits that are available. At least masterpieces has hard signed Jeter and Ripken patch autos /25. Finest does have some finest moments sticker autos, Yay!, not so much.

Prime cuts are hovering around the $260 area. I can tell you that there is no way these are worth that price. Many of the box toppers are selling for $30-$80 and it seems that the collecting world has grown tired of useless rookie sticker autos. There are some massive hits to be had, but even Gehrig brings half the price back.

Am I just that clueless?

2009 Topps Mayo and those pesky N43 lack of toploaders

Blowout has the product info here. Gellman is correct in that this is the football ginter. Rip cards, box toppers, minis etc, but I have to say that I really like the 08 version although I could do without mini cards because the set is damn near impossible to put together because of the shear size. Also, the set is extremely condition sensitive. Kind of annoying actually. If you are on a larger budget, its kind of fun to bust 4-8 boxes to see if you can get a set. Plus the autos hold their value.

Anyway, the 2009 set has white borders and should be much easier to get a good condition set. The autos are on card and if you can pick these up for $60 or less, I would suggest you do so.

On another note, I posted once or twice about Magic box prices. Da has these for $74 and Blowout for $73. I see these reaching low 60's here shortly. Remember, some of these products head down in price a while after release but then they seem to head right back up. 2009 Finest Baseball, prime cuts, all 08 Donruss Football products, etc.

One more thing, those n43 Allen and Ginter cards should fit in these top loaders. Never fear, if the ebay auction I linked to is no longer good, they are ultra pro 4X6 "side loaders". Whatever.

Topps Magic Box Prices

Except for those people that confuse blasters with actual full boxes, people seem to be doing well on the buying end. Prices for completed auctions run anywhere from $54-$72. So if you are in the market for some boxes, do yourself a favor, download bid-o-matic, enter $65.05 keeping in mind shipping costs, and pick yourself up a box or two. Hopefully the auction will end at less than $60.

A note on these types of posts. The reason why I write some of these posts that seem a little silly to seasoned bloggers and blog readers alike is because not everyone is like us. SO for a further public service announcement, remember friends don't let friends buy blasters on ebay thinking they are retail boxes or hobby boxes. So if you don't know the difference find out for each particular product.

How much is it worth

Beckett apparently says $100. I say not even close to $30 unless a set builder or two get into a bidding war.

toolrob comments:"That Mills is def. a nice hit, it doesn't matter who the player is (see 2007 Contenders rookie ticket auto of Kenny Irons); it's simple supply and demand. People need that card to finish their sets."

The irony of the situation is that AJ Hawk /399 Patch/auto and sells for $40 or $20 and the Holmes can't even bring $80.

What say you. Is this the "nice hit" the other board dwellers claim, or is this an ok card that no one cares about?

My opinion is that I wouldn't even bid a $1 on the thing.

Oh yeah, and please stop saying Sick, mojo, or celebrating meaningless serial number coincidences.

Here are the ebay auctions.

Finally was able to pick it up:

/35 distributed in 2005 Topps Update and Highlights. I've seen 2 others on ebay in the last 2 years. I paid a bit much for it and yes it is a single color "patch" but how many of these are still in packs or were destroyed by kids that bought packs at walmart. I actually think cards like this should be hobby only. To answer your question it was $19 shipped.

Here is my Bob Lilly Auto /25. This is a brilliant card except for the idiodic lack of a signing area. Compare.

The Campbell looks much nicer in my opinion.
