The Fallacy of buying Vintage Wax

Update: I had no idea that Ebay had done this or that Gellman had posted his article about it until after I posted this. I was actually thinking of this article* yesterday and didn't get around to it until after I made dinner.

Regardless of resealing and searched wax, which should be seriously considered even if the pack is GIA certified, vintage wax is s suckers bet. There seem to be some rare exceptions. Possibly 63 Fleer Baseball, in other words small sets with cards that sell for substantially more than the cost of a pack or in the aggregate the cards will come close to the cost even if you pull mostly commons.

For my hypothesis I will use common 70's and 80's wax boxes.

Consider the following:

1976 Topps Football.

Single cards: Obviously the card to get is the Walter Payton Rookie. A PSA 7.0 - 8 runs 120-200. PSA 9's run substantially more. Jack Lambert $40 and a gaggle of others $7-$30 graded. Raw substantially less.

The Set: $200-$300

Sealed Packs: Recently on the Bay a Rack box went for $3,650 and a wax box went for $1082.

I get it that if you buy a sealed box you are looking for PSA 9's and 10's but good lord that is a hell of a bet. In the wax you are getting 1 Payton and in the Rack 2-3 maybe.

1983 Topps Baseball:

Singles: The big 3, Gwynn, Boggs, and Sandberg. Three HOF's. PSA 8's can be had for $10, $10, and $6-$10 respectively. Others can be had for $2-5.

The Set: $20-$30

Boxes: Wax As Low as $50. Cello: $76-90

Again, you can gamble on PSA 9's and 10's of the Big 3. Remember though, each box has 540 cards in it and the set is 792. So its possible you might get 1, 2, 3 or none of them.

1984 Donruss:

Singles: Mattingly, PSA 8 $15-$40, the rest are $10-$20 cards max.

Sets: Factory Sets $80-$100

Wax: $112-$152

Again, you can buy a factory set or the graded stars for much less than a box.

1982 Topps Baseball:

Singles: Ripken PSA 8 $25 shipped max

Set: $40, Factory sets seem to be $299. Never seen one before.

Boxes: Cello $75 - $120, Wax $75-$95

1981 Topps FB, 1984 Topps FB, 1986 Topps FB have similar differences in price as the 76 Topps Football.

I get that its fun to bust the wax, but with one card per set that is worth anything it is a terrible "investment" i.e. gamble. At least with newer sets there are tons of high dollar cards. I have considered buying a Cello box of early 80's wax just for fun. Some can be had for $2-$4 a pack, so not all that expensive, but not a smart buy either.

*Nothing I write can be considered an actual article.

Sweet Spot Break Cards

I got an email from Pop Startled about the Sweet Spot cards. They were mailed out on Tuesday. When I checked the tracking numbers, it showed they were accepted on May 26 but left the Portland facility yesterday May 29th. Not sure what the hold up was. I sent them all first class mail "3 day" for those of you on the east coast. If you do not receive them by Tuesday please let me know. I know that FreeAndyLaroche's was delivered this week but he is just down the freeway from me.

I almost forgot, the Hamiltonians cards went out yesterday because she is from canadia and they force me to actually go into the post office to mail the stuff.

Prime Cuts Box is on its way

The Prime Cuts Box for the break is on its way, the Heritage will be ordered on Monday. Five teams left.

Oh yeah, I picked up 2 boxes of 2009 Football Icons for myself.

I've been joe collectoring -2009 football breaks

See the baseball monthly group break below. Filling up fast but some nice teams available.

I know I ran the survey on what I should bust next but I got some good prices on some 2009 elite, heroes and magic football. You will see at least 3 boxes of magic, 7 heroes and 2 elite in the next month or whenever they are released.

Good Teams still available for Monthly Baseball Box Busters

Yup, see post below. Or find it here.

Anyone interested in a monthly baseball break?

SCU does a monthly football break but no one does baseball. Here is how it would work: $15 a team. Mid to high product. Spa, spx, finest, threads, etc. You would probably see combos like 1 box prime cuts two boxes Allen and ginter etc.

Now for the options.
Option 1: random team assigned every month.
But because we have so many team collectors.
Option 2: permanent teams. Assigned first come first serve basis. I think this would work because even the nationals and brewers have fans.

Let me know what you think.

An interesting card

1975 Topps Mini's - Once again, no longer rare

Hat tip to Topps Archives. I have to say it is one of the most interesting blogs out there.

I have said it before, but 1975 Topps mini's are not rare, nor are any other regular issue cards from the past 50 years.

The auctions ended up at what $700 a box? That's just stupid. No one loves old Topps as much as I do, but the stuff isn't rare. When the Boomer generation, god forbid, passes away. Cases of 70's, possibly 60's Topps are going to come out in droves. Singles will be everywhere.

Sweet Spot Group Break Mailed

All your Sweet Spot are mailed out. Except the Hamiltonian, cause you are canadien and I have to go during business hours.

What happened to....and the sportscardfile

A quick look through my blog roll struck my interest. Where do blogs go? Fake patch, wombat, TCG, sportscardfile. All of those blogs were/are of interest to me, yet they seemingly disappear over night. Sportscardfile and TCG were especially interesting due to the insider perspective. Anyone know where they went?

PS I also noticed that upper deck had viewed my blog through a google search of "what happened to sportscardfile.com"

Box Pricing - DA Cardworld, Blowout, Big T

Does anyone have an idea why the box prices are so different between the major on line sellers?

Sniping on Ebay using software

Acceptable or no?

2009 Bowman Baseball or Bowman in General

I watched the break over at Stale Gum. God this product is crap. Hundreds of players that will never make the majors. Awful black borders that are easily damaged. The same design as the last 5, 6, or 7 years.

Its a shit product and Topps knows it.

Box Prices Revisited - DA Cardworld, Blowout, and BigT

As I pondered the cost of my next major purchase, I became confused about the differences in prices. Example. The Prices don't seem to vary too much overall, but National treasures 2006 varies up to $100 a box. I prefer to buy from DA, but they just can't compete with Blowout's sales. How can there be that much difference?

2006 National Treasures:
DA Cardworld: $335 box
Blowout: Sale $275 as low as $225 high of $375
Big T Not available

2008 National Treasures:
DA: $370
Blowout: $346
BigT: NA

2008 Champs Hockey Case
DA: $1150
Blowout: $1175
Big T: $1170

2008, 2007, 2006 Exquisite Football
DA: $475, $380, $360
Blowout: $450, $320, $355
BigT: $440, NA, NA

2008 Topps Murad
DA: $685
Blowout: $650
Big T: $595

Even if, even if this guy got this in a pack without the case, what the heck does it matter? Any idiot can take their A and G jersey card and take it out of the case. Is this guy that idiot? Only he knows.

Champs vs. National Treasures

Seems the Champs and National Treasures cases tied. My vote breaks the tie. The Winner:

National Treasures. The prices have bottomed out. Now the question is: Does DA Cardworld or Blowout want to sell it to me the cheapest?

Boxbusters Raffle - Prime Cuts

Go check out Ross' raffle here.

15 bucks gets you a slot. The winner gets a box of Prime Cuts.

Thoughts on the Sweet Spot Group Break

Collation:
Odd to consider for a product like this, but an issue none the less. In football Booker, Beck, Palmer, and Landry Oh my. Not double per se as they were parallels or different cards all together. Conversely we ended up with a lot of Redskins and Dolphins

The baseball collation was pretty good overall. We got a bat, a glove along with the balls. We got a broad range of jersey cards and base.

Condition: I don't know what the cure is for the condition that these cards come out of the pack in. Not so much edge wear, but the corners. Nothing too terrible, but it does detract from these cards. Frankly, I think they are close to being perfect. I really like the look of these cards.

A further note on condition. I put these into penny sleeves, very tight fit, and then 130 pt toploaders (tight fit again), some bigger. I was very careful and no damage occurred during this process. Any of the defects you notice on the cards are how they came out of the pack.

Pulls: I feel pretty guilty about pulling the Peterson and the Pence, but there were some other good pulls as well. The Colts did well, Indians, Reds, Dodgers. Overall, I am happy with the product. It can be a tough break on a team by team basis.

Cards will go out Monday or Tuesday.

Credit where Credit is due. Thank you Upper Deck

No, Upper Deck has not fixed the Masterpieces Hockey Debacle nor do I expect them to do anything because I am not sure what happened. They have as of yet to fix the Masterpieces Football case problem as well. Just giving them some time.

What Upper Deck did was replace a bunch of higher end damaged cards. The ones they couldn't replace, they sent 3 packs of SP Authentic Football in place of. Frankly, I would have rather had the cards replaced, but they did the best they could and I appreciate it. Took them 8 weeks or so, but they came through regardless.

Thanks Upper Deck

Why I Blog

There are a number of reasons.

I like reviewing sets that I do box breaks of.

My job is stressful as hell and it is a nice distraction

The blogging community

The group breaks

Sharing with and getting information from readers.

Where are my sponsorships? Just kidding. Actually no, I was hoping to get one with this blog, still coming up empty.

and now, the rest of the story.

I have collected cards for 26 years now and to be honest I long for the days of TFD and one set of each. Everyone in my family collects something, I think its in our blood.

Some of you saw my post back on March 6th where I was giving up on collecting and my blog. Here is what happened. It was a Friday night and I had gone to my parents house for my birthday dinner. My brother's birthday is the day after mine. He is older by almost 6 years. Him and I have taken divergent paths in our lives. He got into drugs and general stupidity and I had my cards and baseball.

Through the years he was loosely connected with my collecting. I still remember in 1985 I was in an albertsons at the Springfield mall. I was picking up a couple packs of 85 topps baseball and he wanted a couple of packs too. He put them in his back pocket and started to walk out of the store. He thought I had already paid for them but I hadn't. I told him before he left the store and I paid for them and we went on our way. I don't think he had an interest in collecting but he wanted to be involved in something I was interested in.

In 1990, he bought a box of Donruss from Fred Meyer, I still have the 800ct box with his cards in them. He would buy me boxes of cards for my birthday and christmas here and there.

This year, he wanted to buy me a box of series 1 topps. He doesnt really know anything about cards and so he had my dad bid on a box that the title was "2009 topps series 1 retail jumbo box". The seller is a total crook as these are just 24 pack retail boxes. My dad thought he was getting an actual Jumbo box as they were in the 80's and 90's well and even today for that matter. He paid $57 for it. Way too much I know.

My brother was really upset about it as he thought he got ripped off. No big deal I told him as I appreciated that he would think to buy me a box of cards. I tried to tell him that hobby boxes are more expensive than that (they were at the time). He was hung up on the odds of the autos/jerseys hobby vs. retail. Anyway, he became very agitated and we got into a huge fight about it. Really stupid that we were fighting over cards.

I kept telling him that it wasnt a big deal because I was just happy to get the box. The thing with people that have been drug addicts is that they loose the ability to reason, become easily agitated, etc. Drugs really do screw people up, don't let anyone tell you different. Pot makes you lazy.

Anyway, that's what happened. Things still aren't resolved, in fact we haven't spoken to each other since. I stayed away from the blog for a while, I didn't want to have anything to do with it. I blamed a crooked seller, the silly state of the hobby but I didn't blame what I should have.

Justin had emailed me and said that he wanted to take it over, but I haven't heard from him in quite a while. Not sure what happened.

During my time away even though it was a couple of days, I realized how much I really enjoy the blog, the comments from my readers, and posting. The box breaks are fun. Of course they cost a fortune. I was buying a box or two a day back in October and November. Finest, Masterpieces, whatever. You will notice my box breaks have slowed down quite a bit. That's because I have spent 2800 on taxes and 2900 on my sister in the last month. Thats why I am taking a crack at these group breaks because I get to have all the fun at very little cost.

The one thing that remains is how much I enjoy my blog and my readers. Hopefully you all find it as intersting as I do.

2007-08 Bowman Sterling Basketball 3 Pack Video Break

In my Murad Case I received 3 redemptions. 1 Mario Chalmers Black auto, 1 Mario Chalmers Silver auto and a DJ Augustin Auto. I had read on someone's blog that Topps was not going to fill these redemptions with the actual cards but with Topps Signature Cards. Topps Signature Basketball is essentially Topps clearing out the thousands of left over auto stickers from their stores as Panini was granted an exclusive license.

I got 3 such cards, 2 Spud Webb, 1 Isiah Thomas. I gotta say, even though they are sticker autos, I like the cards. Nice and simple. Plus Webb is awesome and come on Isiah? Sure.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Along with my first Spud, Topps tossed in some Pox's of 2007-08 Bowman Sterling Basketball. These run $30 a pack. Nothing like $90 worth of free packs. Topps customer service has really come through for me.

Here is the video. No audio. This is the type of video you will get on the sweet spot group breaks.

Both Group Breaks Are A Go

Both the Baseball and Football Group Breaks are a go. The boxes ahem Tins will be ordered on Friday. So get your money in. Signups close on the 20th.

2007 Sweet Spot 10 Tin Group Break Football and Baseball

Still dancing for my dinner on this one. Let me see if I can put this into perspective. I picked Sweet Spot for these breaks because the cost/benefit of Sweet spot when done with 10 tins is very high. I wouldn't be surprised to pull at least 3 high dollar cards out of each product.

Football:
The 10 tins will yield (approximately).
10 Rookie autos
10 Regular autos (some possible rookies)
20 jersey cards
20 base cards

There are a ton of great rookies and vets in this product. Sure we will come up with some dud autos and jerseys, as with every break, but AP, Quinn, Russell, Breaston, Gonzalez, Lynch. There are a ton of good rookies. Take it from me, I have seen some bad breaks of this product, but I have seen some great ones as well. There are some nice cards to be had on many different teams, so we arent stuck with just a couple teams with nice hits.

Baseball:

Lincecum, Dice-K, Andrew Miller-Jo. There are quite a few high dollar cards to be had here as well. Remember, UD has Griffey, Jeter, Pujols, and others in addition to the rookies.

Reflections on the DA/Upper Deck Masterpieces Case Debacle

Having had a day and a half to reflect on the 2008-09 Masterpieces Hockey Case issue, I have come to the conclusion that I am very unhappy with Upper Deck, if they in fact called DA and told them not to go through with the transaction. If other dealers actually called and complained, then they are just little bitches.

DA obviously didn't want to lose money on the transaction, but the question becomes: How many of these cases do they have and, wouldn't they have rather had the $1300? Well minus visa, shipping, and ebay fees.

Anyway, I wonder how many years DA will have cases of this stuff. Even if they were going to lose money on the transaction, was the whole thing worth losing my business? As I said, I had an invoice that I was deciding on that was about $2k, the whole situation make me want to look around. I'm sure Blowout or Big T might like me as a customer.

2007 Sweet Spot 10 Tin Group Break Football and Baseball

So far I have 10 for baseball and 7 for football.
I don't mind picking up quite a few spots but I am going to need at least 15 to do either one. So if I get 15 baseball and 13 football I can do baseball. If I get 15 baseball and 15 football I can do both.

Update on the 2008-09 Masterpieces Hockey Cases from Ebay.

If you recall, I bought two cases of 2008-09 UD Masterpieces Hockey on Ebay for $650 each.

Figuring that DA Cardworld was not going to go through with the transaction, I received the following email this morning:

Jeff, the 2 cases that you purchased on ebay from us were listed incorrectly. They are supposed to be $950.00 and not $650.00

Unfortunately we can't honor the auctions. The listing program did this without our knowledge. Not only did Upper Deck contact us about selling the product too cheaply, we have had many dealers complain to us as well. It should be $64.00 a box or $896.00 a case.

I hope that you let us cancel both auctions with a mutual agreement email

If this is ok I would like to give you $100.00 further off of the following invoice that I quoted you on as compensation for our error -

The wrong thing to do his is make DA pay for an obvious mistake. I don't care if it was a computer or a person that put in the wrong amount, it was still an error. The right thing to do is let them out of the transaction.

What bothers me about this whole situation is if Upper Deck really did call and bitch them out. Minimum contract price is close to price fixing and I don't like it. I think its a shady way to prop up the price of a product. Much like the PS3, Wii, Televisions, designer shoes etc. Its a free market, or its supposed to be. The other dealers that complained can suck it too.

The upshot is, no cases for me. Meh. BTW, DA checked out my blog this morning before this email was sent. Quite a few times.

2009 Finest Baseball Impressions

Don't forget the 2007 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Football and Baseball Breaks. I want to have Signups completed by May 20th.

I really enjoyed busting this case because it, well didn't cost me anything. Plus I really like Finest. I have busted chrome and Finest and, to me, there is no contest between the two for me. 2005 - 2008 Finest Football is my favorite product series by far.

That being said, my view of 2009 Baseball is an official meh. The rookie redemptions are nice, but the auto patches are not so much. The autos are skribbles, the patches are a bit cheesy, but not as bad as the non auto 2009 Topps Base patches. The parallels are kept to a minimum so they are not so bad.

The Finest Moments autos are nothing special. I pulled two out of the Group Break case and wasn't all that impressed.

I like the base set and the refractors. Quality control was generally good, and there was a good mix of cards. Personally I would rather have the refractors than the manufactured patches.

The Price is outrageous. $90 a box for 2 manufactured auto patches and 1 redemption. None of these cards seem to be holding their value at all.

My opinion is to wait until these hit less than $60 a master box. If they don't get down to that price, just skip it. The 2003-08 Finest Baseball boxes are still highly priced and I just don't get it. I have to say, Finest Baseball is my least favority of the Finest products.

And now, your moment of

daily upper deck no customer service post. Brought to you from my couch.

One of the greatest moments in sports history

Some of you do not, and rightfully so, consider horse racing to be a sport. Personnally I consider it to be a bit cruel and barbaric. However, I can't deny that yesterday's run by Mine The Bird was one of the greatest single things I have ever seen.

Dead Last and a 50-1 longshot, that bastard ran to the front like the other horses were jogging. If you can find the overhead view of the race, watch it after the regular view. In the regular view, it seems as though he came out of no where. When you watch the over head view, you will realize he did. I watched the regular view 5 times and still couldn't figure out where he came from
