Monthly Group Break ideas

I didn't get much input about what people want to see in upcoming monthly baseball group breaks. So what do you think of the following?

2009 SP Authentic Baseball
Prime Cuts
2009 Sweet Spot
2009 Topps T-206
Topps Tribute
Topps Unique
2009 Upper Deck Ultimate

The other thing I am thinking about doing is two breaks at a time. I have a lot of inquiries about people that want to get in on the breaks but can't because their team is taken. Any thoughts on that? The format would be the same.

This is creepy

First of all I think that grown men that pay a ton of attention to college age guys is creepy enough, but the amount of attention these guys give to high school boys is ever creepier. See this link, then click on "message boards".

I couldn't find the middle school message boards, but I'm sure they are out there.

Case value?

I often wonder if some people have a clue when it comes to busting cases. Triple Threads while full of sick nasty mojo hits, plain sucks. It's easy for those that don't bust cases to view a $50 card out of a $150 product and think it is a nice card because it is. For example, when I pulled my Forte and manningham SP Authentic RPA's I was pretty excited because they became part of my collection. Yes, I could have bought each card for less than a box, but its fun to open the boxes and get a nice card or two. These are $30-$60 cards so not a bad difference.

Looking at cases of Leaf Limited, I can't help but say meh. Sticker autos, shoddy condition, and the $1100 price tag does it really matter if you pull an Elway Sticker auto or sanchez/Namath sticker auto. The case hits are nice but I prefer to judge a product on an any given box format. Hence my 3 box average experiment last year. Plus this product has a major flaw. The junky crabtree letter auto. That is horrific. Compared to SP authentic, exquisite or even National Treasures, this stuff is terrible. Hopefully, Panini fixes the auto quality for NT. Here is what I am talking about.

Remember these guys are trying to flip these cases. Also consider Topps Chrome the last few years. One rookie auto per box a bunch or refractors and you can pick them up for $50. Plus you arent stuck with single color jerseys.

So where is the value with these cases?

2007 Upper Deck Masterpieces Serious Black v. Black Linen Green Linen v. Windsor Green

No one likes Masterpieces as much as I. One thing that bothered me though was the use of parallels. Upper Deck in their infinite wisdom decided to put out two un numbered green framed parallel and two black parallel both /99. From more than a few inches away it is almost impossible to tell the difference. Reader Pop Cultured, not to be confused with Pop Startled, asked me what the difference is. Well, I listen to my readers so here we go.

Green: Two Matsuis seemingly the same.
Photobucket
close inspection shows the difference.
Photobucket
Note the textured finish on the frame to the right. That is the Linen version, whereas the non textured is the Windsor. After sorting my cards it appears the windsor are 2-1 more common.

Same with the Black
Photobucket
Even from this angle it is tough to see:

Linen on the right, Serious Black on the Left.

Questions

November and December Monthly Break

The November Break is 2 boxes Legendary cuts and 4 boxes Topps Chrome.

Arfmax commented that he wants to be able to vote on what to open because he wants the break to be things he wouldn't normally open. Well, I agree with him. Please comment as to what you want the December and Janaury breaks to be. Remember to keep in mind the cost and availability as well as the appeal. Topps Chrome is a popular product and that's why I picked it. The guidelines are 1 higher end product and one midrange product and please put the number of boxes.

Fire!

My dad's chevelle that I am having restored for him was in the shop at the time. The car had been dipped, block sanded and was ready for the paint booth. The car has to be redipped. Ugh. The chevelle they refer to in the video is his.

2009 Topps Triple Threads baseball

I have nothing good to say about this product. If you are looking at buying packs of this take my advice and don't. Just buy the singles. See Gellman's write up at SCU. Its says it all.

Here is a break

another

another Here are the ebay listings. It will be interesting to see how much of a bath this guy takes. He will probably do better than most because these are some of the first singles to hit ebay. In a week or two these cards are just some of the thousands that will be competing for buyer dollars.

These are 9 and 18 box breaks at $1350 and $2750 a pop. Sure there are some nice cards, but each year is the same as the last. You might end up with $30 worth of cards for your $140 box if you buy them separately. The only way to come out is to get the case hit.

Many of you are thinking that is the way it works for most boxes, but I disagree. Every box of Exquisite has at least 1 really cool card in it, and that has been my experience with most other products as well. Yes there are other products that suck just as bad, Sterling, X, Documentary, etc, but I don't buy them either.

idiot

I'm willing to cut people slack on getting cards graded for their personal collection. This is a card that is maybe a .50 card maybe $2 at a shop if you really really really want it, but why the hell would you get this graded and then sell it? It is not condition sensitive. No chance of fakes. How much could it possibly be worth even if it came back pristine?

More lunacy

On a very exciting Saturday night I found this. For $365 you can have a cello pack of 73 Topps. Or for $31 you can have a PSA 7 NM Nolan Ryan. For a little over $200 you can have a graded Schmidt.

If Clemente, rose, or Aaron is your flavor you can pick them up.

So good luck with that cello pack. By the way you have no shot at getting the Schmidt in this pack because it is the wrong series.

Group Breaks

We are halfway through the month and this is your early reminder that the November break will be on us before we know it.

I decided to take down the other group breaks I was planning because the breaks I have seen have been crap. I watched Stale Gum's Bowman Sterling break and saw, what I would pay, $20 worth of cards pulled. Basically he got a bunch of crap.

As I saw more and more Ballpark breaks, I noticed the same thing. There are some nice hits, but most of the cards are $4 jersey cards.

However, if anyone has a group break they want to be a part of, I will be more than happy to host it.

Graded Cards and their rarity

I have commented many times that cards produced in the last 40 years are not that rare. What drives their popularity to a degree is that each one is "the card" If you want George Brett's rookie you instantly know that it's the 75 Topps card you want. If I say Adrian Peterson Rookie, many people will think 2007 Exquisite as the best card but frankly you have your choice of 100's of Peterson rookies numbered in varied quantities. My point is that there is no way that some of these cards should be valued as high as they are given production numbers, thus the "it" factor is what makes them valuable. Peterson cards are valuable because he is the best right now, given the production numbers and the cost to acquire new, they should be much more valuable but they aren't because of how many different versions there are.

Another interesting fake or no?

This Jerry West Card.

To the best of my recollection these were all hand numbered to 2500 or similar and there was NO HOLOGRAM on the back except for the regular basketball hologram that was found on the back of all Upper Deck cards. Plus they were signed in blue ink, but I could be wrong on that fact. Anyway, the seller is trying too hard to make it look legit.

Same goes for this Ted Williams.

Group Break Cards

Went out tonight, unless you live in Canadia.

Just say no to sticker autos - National Treasures.

Friends, collectors, citizens of earth we must come together to keep these from being abused by sticker autos.

2008 SP Authentic Football Box 1 of 6

Finally got around to posting these. I did really well. SP authentic may be one of the few products that you can flip and pull your money back out.

I got 25 rookie authentics in 6 boxes, most of them have soft corners. I'm not sure why that is.

This violates my rule of lineman getting auto cards. He wasn't a top 5 or 10 draft pick was he?
Mr. Long was however, thus this RPA gets a pass.

Crabtree signed, now what?

As you probably know, Crabtree has signed a 6 year deal. What does this mean for his cards? His cards have sold ok over the past few months with somewhat of a downward trend, but I don't think you will see too much of a bump in the prices because collectors will be concerned about his impact and the long term growth. Also, Crabtree has a ton of cards on the market. The pent up demand for releases won't be there until we get to Exquisite or even SPA. Even then, without him going gangbusters in his first few games, you will probably see him at Manningham levels. Just a thought.

Group Break cards will go out Thursday or Friday

I haven't heard back on any of the trade offers posted but I am going to give it until Thursday before I get them packaged up.

2008 Masterpieces Football Patch Wantlist

I need 20 of 60 and the list is shrinking. I am now 2/3 of the way there and because I am a glutton for punishment, after I complete the set my goal is to eventually replace my single color patches with 2 color and above. Some of these I have never seen a copy on ebay or if I have its been 1 and have gone for way too much.
