Panini Platinum or just Panini Part 10
Yup same set over and over and over and over again. Yup, there will be some cool autos, jerseys and patches.
Regular
Platinum
Although this could be their Topps Chrome so i can't fault them too much yet. Although, as all my friends know as always, I have a theory.
I mentor law students, some do very well and some really struggle. The ones that struggle just come up way short on points and usually there are too many essay questions to answer. Additionally they aren't strong writers so there are other reasons too. Here is my theory. The first 5-8 points are really easy to get on any given question, sqeezing those last 2-5 is difficult. So if they are getting 7 on 4 questions instead of 5 on 8 questions they are really hurting themselves. So, if Panini makes 10 proucts and is always guaranteed those first sales due to it being a new product, it is probably more profitable than just making 5 products and trying to really squeeze out those last few sales.
Some auctions make me laugh
This is one of them. Dude, the man won't have $15 bucks in 20 years. Let alone be worth it. By the way I have 5 of these and usually get them for $6-7 shipped and as low as $4 shipped.

The Hockey Break
Trading has been pretty brisk thus far, but frankly I have a lot of teams 8 because I came up 4 slots short of filling it. If you have a favorite team and you see it belongs to IAMJC and you want to buy it, let me know, even if you aren't taking part currently. I normally don't do this, but I want to get people involved. Teams I own:
Ducks
Jackets
Wild
Starz
Predators
Blues
I want to keep the Oilers and the Flyers

This is a bullfighter that was gored. I found the pic on MSNBC. You have to click to the jump to see it. The guy is currently still alive. This is sports related, bullfighting, although cruel and in my opinion idiotic, is still considered a sport.
Help a Brother Out - Stadium Club First Day Production
Scott writes:
As of 5/29/2010, I need only 1 card to complete the 1993 Topps Stadium Club First Day Production Set. I am looking for #557 Don Mattingly and am willing to pay full book value for it. If anyone comes across one, please email me at mtnman661@comcast.net By the way, I have heard of only 2 complete sets since I have been collecting the cards. I also am just about done with the Football and Basketball sets as well. Scott

The Way I Prospect
Prospecting is a funny funny business. Most people, although they wont admit it, lose a bunch of money doing it. Rarely do people load up on $10 cards and end up selling them for $50 or so. Here's what I do. I find second and third year players that have shown some promise and see if I can find cheap cards. Many of you wont be impressd by this card but its a tough damn pull and I picked it up for less than the price of a pack $3.50.

Blue Xfractor /50. Its not an auto, nor a jersey, nor a patch, but a rare card of a guy that has shown some talent.

Find the break here. The break is happening even if I can't fill the last 4 spots. I want to do this monthly so I figure that when people see the break they will want to join the next month.
Btw, I am not illiterate these days. I type too fast for Twitter, Blogger and facebook and each respective page doesn't pick up everything I type, so it appears I cannot spell.

Really, not 5 more people like hockey?
Because it doesn't get much better than my Hockey Break. Either way the break is going forward. i will pick up the remaining slots and I will not take the Penguins. In other words, when I do the randomizer if I end up with the penguins I will rerandomize the teams. So if you have been holding back from joining because you dont want to pointlessly sign up, fear no more.
Why Event Used Is still a good investment
Although I question the long term vability of sticker autos due to the availability of on card autos for most everyone, I am starting to come around on event used items. Here's why
It occured to me during the rookie premier this week how big and similarly well known in the hobby this even is. We all know the story that the players put on some helmets, toss some balls, wear some pants and jerseys sign boxes and boxes of cards and sheets and sheets of stickers. Excuse me while I digress a bit.
One of the reasons we collect is that it reminds us of a particular year. Collecting is, in my opinion, purely for nostalgia reasons and thus tying a particular player card and set to a year in our life is the whole damn point. Name a year and I can tell you where I bought my packs. Finding as many 86 Topps Eric Davis cards as I could. Good times indeed, and I wouldn't trade a minute of it...Although I would have bought some of those 86-87 fleer basketball packs I came across. We all knew the fresh faced rookies of 87, McGwire, Bo, Rafeal, Greg, BJ Surhoff and others.
Which brings us back to Event Used/Game Used. Game used is special. Used in an actual game, we don't know which one. How many of us remember the disaster that was SPX. Griffey as a Mariner, pictured in a White Sox Uniform with a Reds Swatch. The good news is we know what year that piece is from, oh wait we have no idea. The fact is we have no idea whether the item was actually game used but Richard McWilliams says so....
On to the Event used issue, here is why i think this premier stuff will hold value. We know when almost to the day it was worn or supposed to be worn. We know they were rookies when the wore it. I would much rather have an event used piece of jersey or patch from a true rookie even than a nameless game. Don't get me wrong the second year cards of the big rookies are sweet because we know the jersey piece was worn during their rookie year or at the very least is an event used from the premier. Hence if I am a huge Donnie Avery fan, I am going to be looking for rookie type stuff and that exactly what rookie premier event used stuff is. Even though there is a lot of event used stuff out there it gets used up eventually. Thus I believe demand for the rookie premier items and there isnt so much of it that it becomes worthless unless the rookie turns out to be shit. Its not like the stuff is manu patch crap.
BTW, I have lifted some photos that Topps took at the premier.

This test is hard.

Why Fantasy anything other than Football sucks
and FB is lurking around the suckage pool.
In full disclosure I was just kicked out of a baseball league. Ne explanation but the only thing that I can figure out is that I wasn't "active enough". I don't even think I was in last place. First I was innundated with so many lame trade requests that I stopped responding. Why did I stop responding? Because the same 3 guys were offering me a marginal infielder and a marginal middle reliever for close to franchise level players. Ok, first 2 players are not better than 1. Second, maybe I like the player you are trying to get. I am under no obligation to trade anything to you nor tell you what I would like in response the more requests you make does not make me more likely to trade. Many of us bloggers deal with this when we bust boxes. Some dude with 5 packs worth of commons wants us to check out his bucket to see if there is anything we want. The other reason I may not have been active enough is that I didn't drop and add 3-5 players a day. Frankly if you have the time to do this you aren't getting laid nearly enough. At least in football you have tuesday wednesday and most of thursday to get your roster set.
I get that fantasy baseball isn't supposed to be realistic, but why must we turn over our entire team to be competitive? Yes I have done very well in leagues. Held first place in a hockey league wire to wire until the playoffs. Played for the title in a couple baseball leagues and football as well but I am not going to do the aforementioned add drop every day. Leagues should limit the number roster moves to a more realistic 2-4 per week. Picked up Heyward or Castro after he went off, dropped him by Thursday for a few days and then picked them back up the following Monday and then dropped for good after that. Enough about that
Here's the deal, college based teams suck. There are never enough players, nor teams to support such a thing. There are a few teams that kick ass and other than those 2-4 you have no shot of winning.

Timeless Treasures Basketball Live and.....ooooo
Not so good. From a collectors standpoint the cards look nice, not a bad price point, but singles only kids. From a box breaker's perspective you could sink $500 into 5 boxes and get $150 in return or conversely you could have picked up the cards you wanted for half that.
Here is an 8 box break, 5 boxes and of course forum idiots are yammering about sick cards and nasty patches and the like. The problem being is that, as much as I would love to pull Kobe, he is a $100-$150 auto these days and all over the place thanks to Panini. Kobe is there guy and I appreciate Panini making so many of them for us collectors, but it certainly devalues the auto. As I posted some time ago in a "Where do we go from here", Prime cuts for baseball and Exquisite in Basketball and Football has killed the high end market in the sense that you can't get much bigger and better. Its like a junkie, after a while the hits just don't get it done. Same thing with Timeless Treasures, been there done that. At least the boxes are cheaper than Exquisite.
Timeless Treasures sells for $92 a box so make your own decision on that. Other than that, this looks like a save your money product. As one person put it "its sweet shot" which is very true. Pick this product up when it hits $70 a box. Don't get me wrong these are nice cards and I would like to pick a lot of them up, but not at the price they want. There are some nice patches available and jerseys of retired guys that we haven't seen before or are not produced often like Mikan:

Topps Football Feedback
Topps wants feedback, here it goes:
1.What products from our previous Topps football lines would you like to see us continue or bring back?
Base, Chrome, Finest, Mayo (with On-Card autos)
2.What new products or ideas would you like to see?
New products - Thats easy - An SPA knock off with 1 RPA and 1 regular auto or jersey per box with true patch parallel numbered to 50 75 or 100. 200 card set with 40 SP's. Autos are on card, no foil board, no letter autos that look like junk.
Redemptions for auto helmets, balls, jerseys, game tickets, Framed Auto Picture of rookie class from rookie premier.
3.Which 2010 NFL Rookies would you like to see us sign to autograph deals?
Exclusive deals..none. You are going to get a lot of Tebow answers, but frankly the top 2 QB's, WR's, and RB's. Other than that you know the guys that were drafted too low. Golden Tate, Ed Dixon...etc. No OL's, DL, etc. These are a waste of cardboard and ink.
4.Regarding our products calendar, which releases would you like to see early in the season, late, etc?
Topps Base and Chrome, then Finest midway, Mayo and un named SPA knockoff late.
5.Are there any NFL-related themes, anniversaries, celebrations, etc. you’d like to see featured in our 2010 products?
Superbowl, HOF, and Pro Bowl.
BTW, see my article here for the greatest insert set ever.

Hockey Blogs, Group Breaks, and Box Breaks
Is there anyone out there that has a Hockey Blog?
Are there people out there that do Hockey Group Breaks
Is there anyone out there that does Hockey box breaks regularly?
If so please comment and let me know.
As some of you may know, I have collected Hockey for like forevers, well since 1990. I don't post about it much because of the interest level, but I am trying to change that. I'm feeling it these days.
The other thing is that I know of fieldlevelview gets some hockey product to break, but, and this is not a knock on Jason at all, his knowledge of hockey, he admits is not what it is in comparison to baseball. Are there other blogs that are sponsored by Panini and/or Upper Deck Hockey?
