That 70's Mock Up - Non Sport

BTW I found the color sample in publisher. It was right in front of my face.
I really dig this card.

2009 Elite Extra Edition Baseball Blaster Boxes - Group Break - 9 slots left

15 slots. You pick the first team you want. After all 15 slots are filled, I random the remaining teams. It would be $30 for 2 teams. 28 for each additional slot.

Basically there are 20 boxes per case. Each box has 2 autos or gu with plenty of hot boxes of 4-6 autos. These seem to be hobby packs in blaster boxes.

This will be done on Youtube and all cards will be distributed.

Comments on the product would be welcomed.

The minis are badly miscut:

Note that this is not merely off centered but the cut isn't straight.  Stale gum confirms badly cut minis in his blasters.

stalegum @iamjoecollector @toppscards I pulled four American Caramel minis out of 2 Topps 206 Blasters and all four were badly mis-cut.

A Gretzky Concept - Prepare Yourself it's Colorful

See how easy it is to match?

but I can in 10 minutes

At least one more

A note of card design and my mockups

Yesterday's little exercise in card design started out as a farce.  Some of you may chuckle, but it turned out that I actually liked the designs.  Yes the colors don't match quite like they should, there are some parts where the graphics don't match up etc., but lets look at this for what it is.  Write me off as a delusional moron if you must. I used MS Publisher, yahoo image search, and 15 minutes per card.

First, I like simple cards, I like inexpensive packs, and I like design variety.  Similarity is fine, but Panini isn't even trying anymore with the exception of their 2007-08 Fleer Ultraesque attempt at ints. There are some design heavy cards that I like, but I get really sick of them quickly.  I hate SP authentic base cards, Exquisite base cards are high quality, I don't dislike them, but they are over designed.  The other thing I don't like is cheap card stock and high pack prices.  By high pack prices, I mean I'm not going to Wal-Mart to pay $3 for 8-10 base cards that are most likely going to be in terrible condition especially when I can get a HOBBY box for an average of $2 a pack.  For you nit pickers, basically I can get a hobby box for 1/2 the retail pack price on a  per pack average.

My goal was to have a retail/hobby product.  It bugs me that I don't see packs of cards in convenience stores.  I, for one, am not a fan of the hobby retail divide.  For example if I saw a fresh box at a convenience store, the chances I would by the whole thing like I used to do back in the day are pretty good.  I see why it was done, but I don't like it. It seems to be a profit center for the companies.  In other words retail margins are ridiculous.  Am I going to be right about everything?  No, but I'm pretty sure that with some slight tweaks the product would be viable.

So let's get started. Here is a basic sell configuration:

Printed on cardboard.
12 boxes per case/24 packs per box/5 cards per pack
$1.99 per pack

Jumbo Boxes
6 boxes per case/24 packs per box/15 cards per pack
$3.75 per pack. (more base cards, but insertion rates are the same)

3 Action Packed 180 Card Series!
Series 1 Released on August 20th with photo from the Rookie Premier
Series 2 Released on October 5th with Rookie in game photos
Series 3 Released on December 1st

Each series will have 135 base cards with 5 Short printed rookies, 5 Short printed Veterans, and 5 Short printed Legends Seeded at 1 per box. (Set collector features

Rookie and Veteran Autographs seeded at 1 in 36 packs Hobby and Retail
Red Ink Autographed versions numbered to 25 1 in 360 packs

All New redemption program with 1 autographed Game Used Ball 1 in 1500 packs. (Can anyone really argue this is not a cool as hell feature, cost may be an issue?)

All New in 2010 Topps. Itunes (Amazon mp3) Redemption codes for a free song 1:3 packs. (this is a true value add in. I'm not arguing that kids are the future but if anything can draw kids to a product this might be one of them)

Each card will have a Red Back variation 1 in every pack
Each card will have a Black border variation 1 in 5 pack serial
Each Black border variation will have a red back variation serial numbered to 500
Each card will have a Red Back alternate photo variation serial numbered to 250

The entire set will be recreated as 4 card box panels with variations that we aren't going to tell you about. You get the excitement of discovering them on your own!

There would be no game used cards. These costs about $1 for each crappy swatch that end up in .50 bins anyway. No pack searching either.

Here are the mockups:

The design is simple, but that's the point.  Obviously on production versions, the colors would be done correctly and the borders would be more even.  In comparison, Donruss same old same old.

More of what I did.  I know they aren't perfect, but really, are the Leaf cards above any better?

BTW, I have a PC and do not have photoshop.

Nobody Expects the Portland Inquisition

I got an email about an uncut sheet of cards and whether I would like to buy them.  Here is the sheet:
It's an uncut sheet of Franz bread cards that were distributed in loafs of bread.  The cards are actually quite nice in person.  The early sets were printed by Star Co.  The sets were produced for many years and include a significant RC:

Thats and 84-85 Drexler.  Basically the emailer wanted to know how much the sheet was worth, here is what I told her:

I am in Salem, but work in the Portland area. These are hard to put a value on and frankly on ebay it could bring anywhere between $5 and $100 but most likely $15-$30. The Blazers are a small market team so there aren't a ton of fans out there but they certainly have some hardcore ones.

There are a few things that affect the value. First, this is that this is not a regular issue set it's a regional product "premium". Second, I haven't seen many of these around, so I would assume that they are rare. Third, Franz put out sets starting in 1986 I believe so its not one of the early sets. Fourth, there are no significant rookie cards.

Turns out the sets started in at least 84, maybe earlier and I meant there were not significant rc's on this particular sheet.

The woes of Goudey mini Mayo mini Goodwin mini and Murad Mini Storage

Back in my day we had one size of card and we liked it. 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 and a 9 pocket page is all you needed.

Now days we have cards between 20 pt and 180 pt thick requiring a bunch of different sizes of toploaders.  Topps, Panini and UD jerseys are generally 75 pt, Topps, UD and Panini patches run 100 to 120 pt (BCW make perfect sized toploaders for patches)  and sweet spot run 180 pt for the helmets and such. Quite a few UD jerseys are 55pt however.  God knows what those UD Bug cards are considered. And as far as size we have all sorts of shapes and sizes. I remember the fits we had when 1989 Bowman came out and they were bigger than the normal size and I had to go find plastic sheets for those.

Lately I had decided to go ahead and build my Mayo mini and Murad mini sets. Knowing that there are those 15, 12 and 9 pocket pages out there I set out to finally put them in pages. I found a box of 100 15 pocket pages for $16 shipped and awaited their arrival. They finally came and I set out to sheet up my Mayos.

One Problem:
Photobucket

They are about 1/16 too wide.  Ugh! The Goodwin mini on the left fits fine:
Photobucket

So with my disappointment firmly in place, I did what I do.  Set out to find a solution.  I then went to look at the 12 page pockets.  While discussing this with Duane from Democratic Roadkill, he inquired as to whether those Goudey Mini's would fit.  Too tough to tell without having the sheets.  Looking on Ebay, I noticed that sheets with shipping were ridiculous and I didn't want to bet $20 on it.  So I swung by Heaven Sent cards in Tualatin, Oregon on my way home from work and picked some up and 4/$1.  The shop owner was nice enough to dig out some mayo and murad stuff to try out.  Seeing that the Murads would be close, I bought 20 and headed on my way.  A few minutes ago I gave it a try and these are the results.
Photobucket
Admittidly these sheets are for stickers so I was taking a chance.  The Mayos are way too tall, the Murads are close but you may find the tops of the cards exposed and these are not a long term solution for them, and the Goudey minis are a big whiffa.  So essentially these 12 page pockets are a waste.
Photobucket
The upshot is you should just stick with the 9 pockets for all cards but Goodwin and Ginter Minis.  For those the 15 pockets will work.  The problem is that the smaller the card, the more likely the cards will slip out.  The fix for this is to use penny sleeves.  Yup, put the mini in a penny sleeve and then in a 9 pocket page. The only other storage possibility is to use those tobacco top loaders  but I determined this to be unwieldy to store sets.

Derek Zoolander: What say we settle this on Youtube... Han-Solo?

Topps Mayo Minis and storage

I haven't figured out how to store these yet, but I did just learn that those 15 pocket pages are not the solution. The minis are an 1/16" too big or the pages are 1/16 too small. I mean, you can force them in, but I wouldn't.

Stay tuned for this important announcement

The Autographed Football Masterpieces Patch Set Project is about to commence. I am now 2 cards from 2 complete patch sets. Ocho Cinco and Felix Jones. Every other card I have at least two and some 8 of.

I have several ways I have thought about doing this.

1. Through the mail

Risk, card may get lost, never returned. Players change teams.

Pro: High volume way to get things done

2. In Person, I don't live anywhere near a football city so this would be difficult. Here is my thought. Maybe some of you could help out old Joe Collector and get some of these cards autod in person, whether it be at an event, game or card show.

Pro: In person I know they are real

Con: Cost and I would need lots of cooperation

I have asked before and some of you replied but I will throw it out there again. Have any of you had NFL TTM (Through the mail) success?

Where is the best place to send the cards? To the team? Anyone have mailing addresses they have used or know of?

Anyone know anything about these? I saw this break over at FCB. I have an opportunity to pick up a cheap case. Anyone interested in splitting it? I could also group break it. 15 slots. The perversion of statistics

Out here in West Coast land, it isn't unusual to be 5-9 hours away from a pro team. When you do live close it can be the Portland Trailblazers and star power can be, um, well, um.

So getting Leon Washinton to the Seahawks is kind of a big deal. If you recall Leon suffered a terrible leg injury last year. His comeback has been remarkable. One of the stastics that was cited is the DVOA. As soon as I saw that, I rolled my eyes. The DVOA is a crock of shit. There, I said it. I looked through the maddening, yes maddening chart of DVOA bullshit and just chuckled. Go to the site and first see if you can make heads or tails of it, and then look to see where the superbowl winners/losers are in the list and generally where other teams were.

My point is that Occam's Razor, the simplest answer is best. Im just telling you to prepare yourself for more Kurt Warner talk and Randy Johnson goodness.

In baseball we have, for pitchers, Wins, Losses, ERA, K's, Walks, and saves with secondary stats of IP, GS. Those are the stats that matter. Now some of you think that W/L is over rated. I agree with one caveat. Take Strasburg. I am not denying that he has great stuff, I'll say it, Hall of Fame stuff. But he doesn't have Hall of Fame durability and it is shown in his W/L record. The man can't make it out of the 6th inning in most cases. So when comparing a guy like Johnson that made it to 300 wins, you can measure his durability. Also when comparing ERA, you can see that Stras has good stuff, so that is why all of the stats above are important to be considered together and that is why W/L is important.

So you take stats like Dave Stieb. His W/L record wasn't that good, but you can see by his ERA that he was a much better pitcher than his W/L. Again this makes my point for me. With a few basic stats you can see that he was a fantastic pitcher. No need for complex statistical analysis. So yes, W/L record is over rated on its own for Stieb, but with ERA the picture becomes clear. The Jays gave him no run support. For another example you need look no further than the unit when in 2004 he was 16-14 with a 2.60 ERA. I see a lot of comments about WHIP, Walks and hits per inning pitched. I see this as being a largely irrelevant stat as the ERA will reflect if you walk a bunch of people. Plus your W/L stat will suffer due to too many pitches.

On to football. Defense. Three things you need to know about Defense. RYPG, PYPG and points. Simple as that. Offense, RYPG, PYPG and points. Those 3 stats will get you everywhere you need to go. No defense has ever been number 2 in defense and the offense been number 2 and the team sucks. Come on man. Now on to my Kurt Warner. Everyone knows that Warner is a Playoff player, although he played well during the regular season. Against the Packers 29-33 for 379 yards and 5 TD's 0 INT's. What the hell else do you need to know? If you ever get a chance to see a replay of the game, I would suggest you do so. Warner didn't throw an incompletion in the last 10 minutes of the game. His defense was shit obviously. Do I really need some sort of complex stats to tell me anything else. Maybe 3rd down conversion, but that will be shown in PPG. If you can't convert on 3rd down, you aren't going to score a lot of points.

With defense, if a team is number 15 in YPG and PPG, chances are they are a decent team that you should be weary of. How will they do against you? I don't know that's why you PLAY THE DAMN GAME. So while Aaron Schatz is in his basement cranking out useless stats, I'll be on my couch enjoying the game. BTW, does anyone really need to look at DVOA or DYAR to figure out who the good teams or players are going to be this year? Screw you Football Outsiders.

I saved this for the end. I know stats too, yup seems like I think I know it all, but I was a math guy before I did the law thing. Not just a little math either. Yeah, screw me I'm an arrogant bastard.

Second Topps Jumbo Football case Break - Interest?

Here is how it works. 12 slots.

I've got 2 paid for and have access to as many as I want.

Each slot is a random assortment of inserts, jerseys, variations, autos. Essentially, everything will be distributed except the veteran base cards and base rookies. I will generate a random list and the autos will be distributed down the list, same with jerseys and inserts, million card giveaway etc.

If you want a particular base team set, let me know.

Each slot is $50. Half the cost of a jumbo box gets you all the good stuff. No need to pay until I tell you.

Break will occur September 1, 2010. I will do as many cases as there are people that sign up. This may or may not get off the ground. We will see.

Paging Captain Canuck, Paging Captain Canuck please pick up the blue courtesy phone

Your group break payment is due.

Canuck: "Let me get the Braves, Cowboys and a Jumbo."

Joe Collector: "$92.50  little man, put that shit in my hand. If that money doesn't show then you owe me owe me owe."

Get that man a contract

Who is Sportscard girl?

My hit tracker show Manila, Philippines.  Any ideas.  After I questioned her gender and location, she asked me a question about Salem,OR.  She asked about Lancaster Dr.  Bad traffic at times but not too bad.  "She" asked whether it was still "gridlock"  Lancaster is not gridlock.   Anyway, her response after me questioning her location and gender just wasn't what it should have been.

Her comments on blogs are not that of a native english speaker and sometimes are just odd.  She has a bunch of stuff for sale.  I think it is some dude that has family in California and sells cards.  "She" has participated in group breaks and the cards are sent to a US address.

OT mostly - Rant

So I ran down to Safeway to get some Diet Pepsi (spare me I like it), anyway, I parked in front of this lady.  She came up to me and asked me whether I had jumper cables.  I told her "Sorry, I don't".  I looked around for a second and there is an auto repair shop right across the street.  I pointed it out to her.  Her response "well the problem is picking up and carrying the car over to the shop".  At this point I did my typical annoyed sigh.  I then, in a calm voice said, "You can walk over there and borrow the jumper cables or one of them will probably drive across the street and give you a jump"  The look on her face was priceless, that she had never considered the most obvious fucking answer.

Which brings me to a long explanation and discussion.  Ok, I get people don't realize that I am a problem solver for a living.  Everything I do is based on analysis.  The other side of it is that I don't exactly give off the dumbass vibe in most cases.  I don't look like a cro mag, I don't dress like a moron with Ed Hardy Affliction Tap Out crap.  I don't wear a hat, and thus, its not on sideways.  I don't have scraggly facial hair.  You get the picture. BTW if you wear your hat sideways, people don't think you are cool, they think you are a dumbass.

No we are on to the sports card portion of dumbassery.  I look at tons of box breaks online in order to pick out products that I might want to bust.  When I started buying boxes, Donruss Threads and Gridiron Gear looked appealing because of the 3-4 hits per box at $55 a box.  Turned out they were shit hits that weren't worth a damn.  Yesterday I was looking at some breaks and for the most part the cards were those crappy auto manu patches where the auto is on the fabric, hate those, and some no name rookie autos.

One guy pulled a nice patch and others started commenting about how they love the product, the great hits etc.  What they don't get is the most obvious answer.  That one decent hit does not a product make.  In comparison, at least my Ultimate case had a good card in every pack, the worst being the aaron curry auto.  Top pick but still not a great hit, but at least he isnt an undrafted free agent. The problem that we have is that many of these posters are either 15 year old kids or people that are so enamored with getting any autograph that they love everything, especially if Panini throws them a bone every once in a while.

Contrast Rookies and stars to SP Authentic.  Everyone knows the drill.  2 potentially shit autos and you hope to pull a nice 3 color RPA.  UD tosses in some dual autos, triples and some other auto/jersey cards for good measure.  There is no question about what the box is going to have for the most part.

Now this isn't a bash Panini, yay Upper Deck post.  Panini is still finding their footing, but they need to break free from the Donruss shackles.  Yup, you Panini execs are clueless on putting out a quality product with any original design.  Shit even GM changes their design once every few years.  Let us not forget the baseball crap fest that was Upper Deck Baseball.  Other than Masterpieces, I didn't see 1 quality baseball product, but Panini can't seem to put out 1 product I want to buy.  But I digress

What I am trying to say is that although Gellman takes much more shit than I do, the shit that I do take is usually from morons that can only see what is in front of them.  Many of these guys are real life extras in Idiocracy.  Huh huh, you hate Tebow! Tebow Rules! Um no, Tebow kicked ass at Florida, no doubt. He is not a pro style quarterback, in that, he does not have the throwing motion to make it, and he likes to run too much and doesn't have the speed to get away with it.  After the game the other night I tweeted to Hackler that Tebow better not do that too often because those hits take their toll.  Basically, much like Strasburg, Tebow has some serious flaws in his approach that may lead to a very short career.  Trust me, I have been lit up by a Division III Linebacker in a pickup game.  Just for comparison, Tebow is an inch taller and has about 20 pounds more muscle than me and I weigh 5 pounds less.   Anyway, take it from me, those hits take their toll.  See that is analysis as to why I don't think Tebow, at this point, will be a successful Pro QB.  On the other hand, Dennis Dixon has a real shot.  He is fast, tough, and can wing that ball 100 miles an hour, he is dangerous.  Cons are that he isn't very big and prior knee injury.  But at this point, I think he has a better shot than Tebow because of his ability to move and throw.

Panini Does something right

These look fantastic.  Great job Panini.
