I still don't need "advanced" statistics to decide the AL Cy Young

Blah blah blah advanced metrics, blah blah blah

I still have no idea why anyone needs avanced statistics to figure out the AL Cy Young.  There has been talk that the W/L record is overrated.  I don't agree with that, but I do agree that it isn't the only stat that should be considered for the Cy Young.

Consider
                    W   L    CG     IP       ERA    BB     K    WHIP   BB/9   K/9

Sabathia       21   7     2      237.2   3.18      74    197   1.19     .31    .83

Price            19   6     2      207.2    2.73      79    187   1.2      .38    .90

Lester          19   8      2      204      2.96      78    220   1.16    .38   1.08

Bucholtz       17   7      1      173.2   2.33      67    120   1.2      .38    .69

Hernandez    13  12     6      249.2   2.27      70    232   1.06    .28    .93

In this case W/L is one stat, but Felix leads or is second in every other meaningful catagory whereas no one else is close to that.  Thus I don't need advanced metrics or stats to tell me who the best overall pitcher is.  If anyone else wins, it's purely based on Hernandez W/L record being poor.

The September Football Group Break - The Platinum Saga

Around the middle of August things were going awesome.  I had low prices locked in on Topps Football Jumbo.  I had everything ordered and ready to go.  Then things changed.

I realized, found out, that Sweet Spot was not coming out until September 15.  My Jumbo cases arrived and bam, the quality control was junk and I was stuck with 40 lbs of worthless cards.  I decided to just drop the jumbo box from the monthly break and then was talked into busting a box of Topps Platinum.

Like a responsible group breaker I immediately purchased the box of Topps Platinum in this auction.  I then start the wait for a tracking number.  It doesn't show up.  Before I found that auction I had put in an offer on this auction and early the next morning the offer was accepted.  I emailed the seller from the first auction with no response and then notice that negative feedback is piling up.  So I filed a paypal claim.

I have received a tracking number on the second auction and hopefully those boxes will be here tomorrow or the next day.  USPS doesn't give an estimated delivery date.  Essentially most everything that can go wrong for a group break has gone wrong, but in a short time the platinum will arrive, the box will be busted and the cards will be mailed.

Topps Jumbo Case Damaged Card Saga Continues

Some of you will recall that a couple weeks ago I was told by Topps to package up my UPC's and receipts and send them to Duryea.  Well I did that.  I then received a letter with replacement T-206 mini cards that told me that a supervisor would be in contact me.

Well a week past and nothing so I contacted Topps by Twitter and then by email.  It was like a brand new day in that no one knew what I seemd to be talking about.  Well Mike from the home office gave me a call today and told me that I need mail all the cards back to Topps.  This is a change from what I was originally told.  If you have ever seen 3 cases be busted you can imagine what this entailed.  Let me break it down for you: 50 cards per pack, 10 packs per box, 6 boxes per case, 3 cases = 50*10*6*3 = 9000 cards.

That is four deep and 3 wide.  All the blacks, golds, autos, jerseys, gridiron giveaway, rookie reprints and on and on.  It weighed just over 40 lbs and cost $45 to send.  Mike said that he isnt sure if he is going to be able to replace the 3 cases and I told him that I have $1500 in these cases.  I checked the cards again just to make sure I wasn't smokin crack and yes, the corners are awful.

Bottom line is I get sent a box of jumbo I am going to be pissed off.  I have concluded, partially because I have now sunk an extra $45 to mail this that they owe me.  Thoughts?

More Snap Case Shenanigans

Why do people continue to ship cards in snap cases so they can bang around in there for 3,000 miles?  Would you ship this card that way? And yes all four corners were worse for the wear.

For the record I now have 4 of these after searching for 1 to complete my set for months.

Triple Threadiness

Earlier today I got an Email from King Felix:

Hey Joe Collector,

What do you think of the new 2010 Topps Triple Threads Baseball? $160
a box or more for 2 packs of cards. I know you weren't a fan in the
past, but are you more impressed with the new stuff? They have some on
card autos now, and the new stickers are way better, don't ya think? I
like how there are more Felix's this year, and the All Star patches
are way cool. What say you?

Here was my Response:

I still wouldn't buy boxes per say. It is still a singles product and their are some nice singles out there. The only way I would say to buy boxes is if you came across a sealed case and then bought 5-8 boxes to see if you could nail the case hit.

I don't hate the product as much as Gellman does, I just think the boxes are a rip off.

J

This product on the wax level makes me sick to my stomach. Check out breaks here, here, and here and over here at Wax Pack Relapse.

Here is the problem, sure if you yank some of these cards you did pretty well but look at some of these auctions from 2009 Triple threads. Here, here, here here and maybe here

Why is that a problem?  Remember these are $162 a box and make no mistake, this is a hit product.  Serial numbered base cards are not worth anything of note.  In other words you can lose $120 a box on this stuff.  The singles are damn nice, especially for team and player collectors.

Pre Order Hockey, Football, Baseball and Basketball

In the right hand column at the top.

The Platinum Box is MIA

This football break has just not gone well. As I was breaking the Ultimate and the Sweet Spot, I had a brown box that I thought had the Platinum box in it. I opened it after I finished recording the video for the sweet spot and the box did not contain the platinum box but other cards I had bought.

So here is the upshot. I am waiting for the box to arrive. I ordered the box and paid for it on Sunday. I'll bust it when it gets here. Sorry.

2010 Topps Chrome Football

To give you guys an idea, I can sell Topps Chrome Football cases for $700 and boxes for $63 plus shipping.  Basically for every extra box you save $1.50.  Paypal fees are a pain.  Ebay basically makes it impossible to sell at a competitive price on their site so I am going to set up some sort of .com

If you want a price quote on any presells let me know.  I can do as big of an order as you like.

1 distributor App Approved, 1 to go

Magazine Exchange approved me today.  Just waiting for Peach State.  I'll start taking orders shortly.  Any products you guys want pricing on?

September Group Break - Topps Platinum

The box of Topps Platinum will be here tomorrow and the break will be up tomorrow night LATE, Like REALLY LATE.  Trading is still open.

Distributor Applications Submitted

I have submitted my distributor applications to Magazine Exchange and Peach State.  I'll let you know what happens and any issues that I run into.

Its kind of odd because I dont have a retail location, nor credit cards or bank accounts in the business name at this point.  I don't have trade references either.  I talked to someone at Peach State and he basically told me it didn't matter.

Any other distributors that anyone knows of. And I know this much, your card shops are generally robbing you.  There are many shops that charge reasonable prices, but others are just gouging.  I've seen some sell sheets.

Uncut Sheet of SP Legendary Cuts - Mystery Cuts

Just plain cool:

Tales from the cardshop - The first steps

Here we go:

Quick backstory. I always wanted to go to law school. Perry Mason reruns and such. About Fall of 2000 I was going nowhere. One night I downloaded the law school application, filled it out and here I am. I finally got sick of talking about it and did it.

Fast forward to January of 2009 and I announced that I was opening a card shop. The plan was to get it open in fall of last year and have my dad run it when he retired. As per usual, life got in the way. My dad got laid off 4 months before retirement and had to start looking for work. It delayed his retirement. I still intended on doing so, but kind of last track of time.

Doing the group breaks over the months, I hated the constant back and forth of prices, shipping games, etc. I started looking for a west coast distributor and realized that Magazine Exchange, here in Oregon, and Peach State are two accessable distros. But you have to be a business to order.

So last night, I registered with the State of Oregon as I am Joe Collector Sportscards. That was step 1. Step 2 is getting my accounts at the distributors.

I am mainly going to be in business selling wax for as cheap as I can. my real costs are going to be Paypal fees, shipping and ebay fees. I am going to sell the cards for as little margin as I can to bring everyone the best prices with no bullshit. My target net margin is 10% because I dont have a storefront at this time and I am keeping my day job. Shipping boxes is easy and I plan on shipping everything Priority flat Rate. 24 hour shipping and doesn't take more than 3 days. I hate waiting a week for cards.

Suggestions?

Preventing Fakes and damaged Cards in High End

In response to me posting photos of Upper Deck's The Cup, King Felix, AKA Phil says the following:

Ok, let's say all manufacturers were to take overhead photos of all the sets and subsets of patch cards and patch auto cards. Then let's say, one could access these photos online at one's leisure. Then, theoretically, the whole fake patch plague that is ruining this hobby would be over. It is really that simple.

The simple answer is yes. Basically it would take about , not even, a day to do per product because of the way that the product is packed out. Take SP Authentic, if the card is /999 then there are boxes and boxes of the same card because that is how they are shipped to the player for auto and shipped back. So when they are received back, the photos could be taken. It might be a bit crude but the process would get worked out.

Now to the damaged cards in high end issue. Its as simple as Magnetic cases. The process would be set up as an assembly line. The magnetic cases would come by on an assembly line and the cards would be placed in them in their packed out configuration. The cards then would be placed in a box and shipped. You could have 10-20, 10-20 foot long assembly lines running at the same time. The cost per magnetic case is about $1 and I'm sure that UD could get a deal on them. Boxes would have to be Magnetic holder sized and the tins or boxes might have to be a bit bigger.

This may not prevent all damage to higher end cards but it wouldn't hurt. If a seal was placed on the holder then that could prevent fakes as well.

2009-10 Upper Deck The Cup Hockey - 20 plus pics

So Hot with your logos and on card autos. How you doin?

Topps Customer Service comes through

Well partially at this point

Photobucket

So the 3 damaged T-206 minis I sent were replaced quickly, and as you see by the handwritten note on the letter, Topps will be contacting me regarding the damaged cases.

I have thought a lot about this whole situation and I've come to the conclusion that I don't know what Topps should do. I dropped some serious coin on the cases and essentially they are worthless as even the autos were damaged. So what is the fair solution here?

The Joys of Set Building, and how to do it on a budget

I have built quite a few sets in the last year, not just base sets, but 1 per pack and 1 per boxe sets of various sizes. I have completed 2007 Masterpiecs Baseball base, green linen and Windsor; 2008 Masterpieces Baseball Base with SP's, Black and Red; 2008 Masterpieces Football Base with Sp's, Black and Red and am 2 away on the Blue and 4 on Brown; 2008 Topps Mayo Football and am 1 away on the Mini set, Antwan Randle El SP, 2008 Topps Murad Base with Sp's and am a few away on the minis; 2007 Ultimate Football /400 1 per pack; 2008 Ginter with SP's(I cheated because a case yields a complete set with Sp's).

The one thing that all those sets have in common are a lot of Sp's and they were not widely broken. The Mayo was limited to 799 Hobby cases and a bunch or retail, murad was limited to 599 hobby cases and I know there was retail but no idea how many. Just like the old days basketball just isnt widely available except for Panini, base topps and base UD.

I like building these sets because they are quite difficult to put together and there aren't that many people that are going to stick to building them. The two ways to go about building them is to bust wax or buy singles or a third way both.

Busting wax can be inefficient and expensive and buying singles can be a long process depending on a lot of variables. For example, buying a 150 card set 2 cards at a time can be ridiulously expensive, shipping and such. With the exception of Comc and sportlots, singles are often difficult to find consistently as well. But spending 500-700 on a case is not possible for most and it can be a big waste of money.

My view is that if you are a set builder, buying a case that sports decent hits but yields a significant amount of the cards you like is a good way to go. If I were a Ginter collector, with the exception of this year, I would buy a case, pull out minis and base that I want and sell the rest. The advantage of doing this that you will often pull a few high priced cards. For example I pulled a few Favre parallels from Masterpieces that would have cost me $15-$20 at the time, no idea about now but I would assume not a lot less than that. Additionally, you can trade or sell any of the cards you dont want such as autos or jerseys. Plus busting wax is fun no matter what anyone says.

The above is only true if you are building anything but a set that is 2 per case and thats it. Obviously building the Masterpeices patch set by busting wax is silly, but building all the sets by busting wax can be extremely easier than singles. Essentially, you pay for the cases on the installment plan that you could have busted with the money you spent on hundreds of singles. This is only true until you get to the approximately 2/3 - 3/4 point of the set. At this point the chances of pulling an sp or a parallel that you need is well 1/3-1/4 of the stated odds. So if a Murad black mini parallel is 1:12 and you are 2/3 of the way through the set, you are going to pull one you need in 1:36 packs maybe.

This is why I reccommend the group case splits. Not splitting the boxes but busting the case and allocating based on set needs. I think people were pretty happy with the Masterpieces case splits I did. If you think about it, if you buy in for an equivilent of 3 boxes, you are going to end up with the same amount of hits, but you are going to do much better on filling set needs or building a set from scratch. Your odds of getting the case hit are the same.

So hopefully this makes sense as to why I offer case splits to all of you. Its a less expensive way to build sets, eliminates doubles and gives you access to the contents of an entire case.

Now its time for a little irony. The Mayo minis and base are tough to pull from a pack in decent shape. The irony is that the originals probably came in better shape than the new ones do. Lots of fuzzy corners, chipping and the like.

Case Split - Group Break x 2 - Philadelphia Football - Razor Rookie Retro

Ok, two different Breaks

Razor Rookie Retro - This break will be live on UStream
12 slots. The list will be randomized and this is how its going to work.

$120 a person
Each slot is either the graded card or the other cards that are included in the box. For example. Slot 1 would be the graded card out of box 1. Slot 2 would be the auto and other razor cards out of box 1. Slot 3 would be the graded card out of box 2, slot 4 would be the razor cards out of box 2. Make sense? I would do this break on USTREAM live including the list randomization.

Topps Jumbo Football Case Break

I have decided to issue refunds. If you would like your autos, jerseys and inserts instead of a refund, let me know. It is going to take some time to get the money into my account. Expect the refund to come through in the next week or so.

I did this because it is only fair to do so. The cards do not meet my expectations.

Donruss Elite Extra Edition Group Break

Is at this point canceled unless I get a few more people.

15 slots. You pick the first team you want. After all 15 slots are filled, I random the remaining teams. It would be $30 for 2 teams. 28 for each additional slot.

Basically there are 20 boxes per case. Each box has 2 autos or gu with plenty of hot boxes of 4-6 autos. These seem to be hobby packs in blaster boxes.

This will be done on Youtube and all cards will be distributed.

Comments on the product would be welcomed.

1. Derek - Braves
2. Motherscratcher - Indians
3. Bonez - Detroit
4. Colin - rangers
5. HEB - Yankees

I dig the base card design.  Doesn't look to be foil board.  The problem being the $96 MSRP a box, that is just too much.  For that prie their better be a patch and a decent auto per box.
Sweet patch card and idea.  The auto checklist is nice except Michael Ontkean and singer Stompin’ Tom Connors!   Who the hell?

I'm a Winner

At least that is what I keep telling myself.  And Blowout thinks so too.  I won a 48 Pack gravity box of 2007 Topps Football in their Twitter promotion.

2010 Leaf Limited Football - Let's Take a Look

These base cards are at least action photos and aren't modern miracles of photoshop.
These letterman would be nice if the auto really looks that good.
and not like
I mean, they can make the letters out of signature material right?

If these patch/autos were on card I would say: "Sooo Hot....Want to touch the Heine"
These Cut Autos just kill me.  Why destroy an awesome piece like that?
