Impressive Panini, impressive

It takes a lot to impress me.  My two main issues with Panini has been crappy hits to make hit count and sticker autos.  Especially in National treasure, stickers are not acceptable.  Well this is what Panini has done with NT this year:

The SRP for National Treasures is $400 per pack; the release date is early March.

These are all on card and appear to be post draft, workout head shots.  The autos are all on card.  That is a monumental effort by panini.  Plus you know the card was actually handled by all the players that signed the card.

Fake Harvin Inscription?

I have never seen another one like this and inscriptions are so easily faked its ridiculous.

Joy of a Completed Set - 2008 Masterpieces Baseball Blue /125

Finally, finally it is done.

As always, some background. I started out by busting boxes in December of 2008 when they got cheap, probably 2 cases or so by now. I realized that the parallels were pretty tough to pull. The blues fall about 7 per case. That means that it takes 17+ cases minimum to put this set together. Anyway, I started the great Masterpieces project some months back and by that time had been buying lots of blues not fully appreciating the rarity. For those people that busted 2+ cases I was buying lots of 8-14 off of them. I noticed that Longo, Ripken and others were going for a ton and hoped I would just eventually pull them.

Realizing that the lots were drying up, I moved to buying singles for $2-$7 each and kept getting closer and closer to the set. Eventually I realized how much I was spending and couldn't buy every last one of them. That's when Duane of Democratic Roadkill and I started working together. I would buy tons of single and we would trade back and forth. Eventually I got down to the last few. I scoured ebay, comc, sportlots, sportsbuy, Beckett and every site I could think of.

I ended up where all I had to find were Derek Lee and Freddie Sanchez. A week or two ago Sanchez popped up and then finally the Lee last week. The rest of the cards arrived today. I couldn't have completed this set without Duane and his diligence. Without futher ado

Slot Break 2006 Ultimate Baseball 2009 Upper Deck Black Football

Any interest in these? All Breaks done live on ustream.

ok, there are 20 guaranteed hits in 2006 UD Ultimate Baseball.

Here is what I was thinking. $34.25 a slot with $2 per additional slot discount.  I would do this case live on ustream, with random done just before I break live on ustream.

2009 Upper Deck Black Football Case Break.
Here is the deal with this. There are 20 guaranteed hits and 20 basecards. But some of the base flag cards are autod. This would be a draft break. I would randomize the list and post the video on Youtube. Here is the kicker. The person that is number 1 on the first list gets first pick of any of the traditional hits. You can trade slots if you like. I then invert the list and the person that is 20th in the hit pick gets to pick first on the flag base. Any auto flag card would be considered a flag base. So most likely the person that ends up 20th in the hit pick list will get a flag auto.
Make sense?
Slots are $48.25 with $3 discount per additional slot.

2010 Panini Certified Football - Sponsored by Panini

On to the Certified Football.  Panini has really stepped up their game and at this point Certfied is their best product out there.  We will wait to see about Limited Football, but Certified Hockey and Certified Football are at the top. So when I opened the box the other night and Certified Football was in there I was stoked.

Base/Rookies/Parallel: The base cards are much nicer this year.  They don't have that same foil board feel as years past and the photos look more like game shots.  Collation was good and quality was good with no noticed damage.
Photobucket
Inserts:  The Best is /50 and is a really nice and the parallels have a solid feel to them.
Photobucket

On to the hits:  I have looked around to see what boxes are looking like and there are many boxes that have 5-6 hits with a ton of HOF jerseys/patches and autos:
Obligatory single color Jersey of Carson Palmer /250
Photobucket
CJ Spiller Rookie Jersey: /250
Photobucket
Rookie Auto: /50
Photobucket
Rookie Auto/dual jersey/599

In the first pack I opened: Dual Patch.  Who are these guys? 25/25
Photobucket

These run $76 a box and mine would certainly have been worth it in my opinion. With 10 packs per box and 4-5 hits, if you buy 4 packs from a freshly opened box at your shop you have a good shot at getting 3 hits. If every Panini product was 10 packs, that would be cool. That's the reason I like the product. With SPA you can buy 5 packs and get nothing but base cards. Not going to happen here.

So I surveyed the Joes on Certified and 4 out of 5 Joes are buying this with the fifth refusing on sticker auto grounds. However, when I surveyed the Janes, the Janes were unanimous and 5 out of 5 are buying Certified.

2010-11 Panini Rookies and Stars Basketball - Sponsored by Panini

Got home from teaching Wednesday night and sure enough a box from Panini.  Opened it up and a box of 2010-11 Rookies and Stars Basketball and 2010 Certified Football were staring back at me.  Awesome.

24 packs, 5 cards One auto patch and 3 additional autos or jersey cards.

Base cards: These are ok, as I have said before, the quality seems higher this year than the past few years.  Good colaltion, no damage that I could see.

Inserts, rookies and numbered parallels.  Panini is well knows for their numbered parallels.  As I have said, I can take or leave the parallels but I do like the numbered rookies:

and the Wilkens auto

Ok, here is the thing.  I could not have been happier to pull the Wilkens auto BUT BUT...I hate these auto patch cards.  I don't like the sig on the fabric, they just don't look good to me.  Just sign the card.  In all fairness to Panini you know exactly what you are going to get in these products but I just don't like them.  I basically feel like these cards are a waste of a good auto.

Prices for Rookies and Stars runs about $80 a box but I think you will see these for $60 shortly.

Two out of 5 joes recommend this product.  One or two more would of if the second auto would have been a regular card rather than a signed fabric thing.
