The trials of a rare set collector

I may not be speaking for everyone, but I think 150 sets is rare. As most of you know I have been down to 2 cards for the 2008 Masterpieces Blue Parallel Set /150 for quite a while. It had come down to two of the biggest stars of the 80's Joe Montana and Walter Payton.

I had seen a Payton listed a few months ago but didn't really want to pay $8 shipped for the card. Who knows what it would have cost if I would have bid on the thing. Anyway, three weeks ago I got a case of Masterpieces football. Lo and behold I pulled a Payton which left me with the Montana. The problem with these situations is that if it is a common that you need, the cards don't get listed because sellers don't see the point of listing commons.  If it is a big star then you know you have to pay out the ass.  This doesn't always hold though.  I bought a Walter Payton green /75 for a mere $8, and I have gotten Time Warp Green/75 and /50 featuring Favre or Manning for $3.  On the baseball side, I just picked up a Ripken (not Billy) /75 for $10

I vaguely remember a Montana being available but cannot be sure. Well on Sunday the 26th one was listed.  Cheap opening bid but I knew the card wouldn't go for a few bucks.  I also saw that it would end about the time I would be flying from Big Sky back to Salem.  What to do?  I knew I would wait to put in a bid until the last minute I could.  I was literally sitting on the plane on the Tarmac in Bozeman, MT as the Flight attendant s were coming around ordering people to shut off their electronic devices.

Here is how the bidding went:

The Seach Continues

Bummer... I know how it feels to get down to one card in a set. After waiting a year or so... I finally entered a bid of double of what I was willing to pay originally and won. I know I overpaid, but it was worth it to finally move on. Best of luck on finishing your set.
