2008 UD Masterpieces Framed Blue 50 76 Steve Slaton/50 $2.00
2008 UD Masterpieces Framed Brown 99 46 Joe Montana/99 $5.00
2008 UD Masterpieces Framed Burgundy 48 John David Booty/25 $7.99
2008 UD Masterpieces Framed Green 50 25 Kevin O'Connell/50 $1.50
2008 UD Masterpieces Framed Green 50 104 Jake Long/50 $2.50
The jake long is actually a blue. At least the pic is of a blue /50. Good thing too, its the one I need for my set. Funny story about this card. There was one on ebay about 3 months ago and it was .99 opening bid and 3.99 BIN. I bid on it expecting to get it for $1.50...It went for $7.50. I was really pissed at myself for that. You have to remember thought that I would buy singles in volume for .50 especially football even in auction format. Now, cards are all over the place as far as pricing goes.
2008 UD Masterpieces Framed Green 75 29 Early Doucet/75 $1.50

Buy Gypsy Queen blasters instead of Hobby until GQ hobby reaches $75. At current prices, you will get 7-8 blasters for the cost of one hobby box.

That's some sweet collation Upper Deck
Find it here.
Some analysis. Obviously there is an issue here but on the good side, this case at least had 1 patch in it where as my Early Doucet case had none. I have run across a few cases like this in the last few months.
First, I saw all the Montana parallels. They showed up on ebay a couple weeks ago. Moses got a box with a bunch of Hester /50 Metallics and the same seller of the Montanas had a 5 of the same. I now have 10-12 of those things. Another case was a Hornung/Peyton Manning case. Additonally, no less than 6 brown /99 Jamaal Charles' showed up from the same seller.
These seem to be localized at DA Cardworld which would make sense.
Up until a few weeks ago, DA had the cheapest Masterpieces football around. This leads me to believe that DA but the leftovers from Upper Deck. These leftovers could have been what was unsold or Upper Deck blew the collations, knew it, and then sold them cheap to DA. Must be why I can't seem to find and Barry Sanders o#5 or Tyree/Manning #3.

Collection Buying - Masterpieces Style
BTW, if you have lots of mid late 90's inserts and inserts from the 2000's whether they be jerseys, autos, or just your plain old inserts and you want to sell them, let me know.
Anyway, Slette began collecting masterpieces Patches and Parallel sets like me. When he told me he was making the attempt, I cringed knowing the difficulty in building these sets. After amassing 24 or so /50 patches and a number of /50 and /25 parallels, Slette asked me whether I would be interested....of course.
Here is what I picked up:
First a couple autos:

/50 blue

/50 Metallics

/25 Burgundy and /10

/50 patches

Somebody has some Splainin' to do
Sorry for the dirty HTML, I wanted to capture this:
Last night I found this auction:
I questioned the seller because we all know, well maybe not all of us, that the 1/1 07 masterpieces jerseys have bronze borders:
Dear beantown116,
Can I get a scan of the back to show the 1/1?
- iamjoecollector
Dear iamjoecollector,
Hi there!
I just uploaded the back of the card to the auction page.
Thanks, Mike
- beantown116
Dear beantown116,
Mike
Is the frame on the front black or bronze in color? It looks black in the scan. The reason why I ask>

Dear iamjoecollector,
Hi again,
I believe it is black. I am color blind, but it seems more black than 'bronze'. It isn't dark black by any standards. I bet the glare from the card protector is giving a different color.
Thanks
- beantown116
Then tonight this auction shows up.
BTW, I know Guru to have busted 3 cases of Masterpieces and his reputation is good. Now I am not accusing Beantown of anything. Is it possible he was sold a fake stamped card?

In last night's episode of Card Corner Club, there was some talk of Barry Bonds and his conviction. For those of you that don't know, Dmitri Young co hosts the CCC show. Dmitri had a very long and successful career. Part of that career was playing first base for the Washington Nationals.
Dmitri was playing first base for the Nats when Bonds hit 756. Dmitri said he wanted to trip Bonds on his way around the bases.....Awesome.
In other news, I was searching for patch sets when I came upon this auction.

The auction is for $6k...That's about $5200 too much in my opinion. Those patches are unrivaled in their size and quality yet things, especially cards, have a finite value. Sometimes someone will pay an obscene amount of money when a one of a kind collection, but this lot is just a hodgepodge of sweet patches. Damn those are nice.
Thomas Fish
is super pissed. For those of you that don't know who Fish is, he is a partner in Blowout Card with Chris Park. Anyway, he called in to Card Corner Club Radio tonight after Chris Carlin from Upper Deck was on. I really can't do justice to Fish's glorious rant. So listen for yourself. It's the Chris Carlin Tom Fish episode from 4/15/11, By the way, I agree with him.
On another note, you may have noticed that I haven't gotten review boxes from Panini in a while. They were none to happy with my speaking out against their price fixing anti consumer shenanigans. That's what I get I suppose.
One more thing. Kudos to Beckett for calling a spade a spade. Let's be honest. Evolution is a piece of dung. THey are cheap, flimsy and just dumb. Oh yeah, they aren't cards neither. I do expect Panini's to be much better. They are autod and don't look like a piece of crap toy you would get at the dollar store. First, Beckett got a review box of 2011 Upper Deck, that surprise surprise happened to have an evolution in it. These are not 1 per case. I have heard of 1:3-4 cases. Dude. Anyway, the way they are packed out is the mylar looking pack is essentially taped to the bottom of the box. If you look at the Beckett video, you can see that they started taking the packs out of the box and then quickly closed the lid as to try and shield the evolution from the camera. Additionally, the Beckett guys are card guys. You better believe that they were examining that box to see if they could tell. They knew it was in there. For Upper Deck to say that they sent them a random box is just too hard to swallow.
Anyway, the evolution was DOA so there is a second part to the video where Beckett charged the thing and then gave their opinion of the thing. They thought it was a steaming pile to the chest too, but said it more nicely than that. Funny thing is that @scoobycub on twitter, an UD employee, was pissed. There was quite the Twitter exchange. BTW, if you are looking to follow daily comments on the industry, I strongly recommend you join the twitter and follow us basement dwellers. I think UD was a little surprised, as was I, that they got an honest response. God forbid
Funny thing about evolution is that Chris Carlin Yammers on and on about value and how much they sell for. He was citing initial sales on ebay and should pay more attention to recent sales. Enjoy that $28 for the Patrick Willis.
And on a final note. Press Pass emailed me on Twitter, there is a private message feature, and asked me why I don't like their cards.

Hi Jeff, just curious what it is about PP cards you don't like?
Hi Jeff, just curious what it is about PP cards you don't like?
You're racing products are fantastic, but I do not like draft products or the mugshot effect that your cards have due to license issues I don't collect bowma baseball, UD Draft, anything like that. They Remington (damn autocorrect) me of the late 80's impel sets.
That is all.

2007 Masterpieces Baseball Case Number 7
Yup, 7 cases since mid February. Man these cases are hit and miss. Spoiler...No Redemptions! I have 1 topper set and shockingly was not able to complete a windsor or Linen set even with an infusion of greens from Duane of democratic roadkill.
Anyway, these will be up on Ebay tonight, if you want something let me know.
The Topper

The Plate: Very Cool Card. The card came packed with the base card in the penny sleeve. The Strokes of Genius plates come with a blank.

The Parallels:
Black Linen

Serious Black

Blue Linen

Pinot Needed the Ripken. Score

Rusted: Already had the Jordan, paid $28 ish shipped

Hades

Blue Steel: Need the Jordan

The Autos: This is my third Timmy in 7 cases. Other than that the big time retired autos are tough ass pulls obviously:

Dodging bullets
When you are to the point I am in building my Masterpieces sets, some cards scare you to death. Especially when you have been watching for 2 years and you see 1 or 2 in that time and they sell for a fortune. Well maybe not a fortune, but more than you want to pay. Also, being down to 6 cards in an /75 set becomes almost unbearable, waiting for cards to show up. Sure enough, 4 of the 6 I needed have shown up in the last week.
Favre Green /75 - Ugh $20 - With how awesome this card is and how rarely it shows up, you never know when Favre collector is going to take you to the limit.
FTR, I am down to 3 Tyree/Manning and 5 Barry Sanders

While cruising Ebay the other day, I noticed that a guy was posting a bunch of masterpieces autos. I took it upon myself to email him to see if he had any parallels. He did. He told me he was going to post them. He Did, as Topps Letterman Parallels. So I made him an offer for the 3 cards below, $22.40 shipped.
and now we have Joe. Joe has been around before. I missed out on it for $15 as I didn't expect it to go for that much. There was a time when I was the only one going after these cards so I didn't expect it to come close to even $10. This time when it came up, I was expecting a huge fight as with the crap that Topps et al have put out, people have been looking to older sets to collect. Not that all products have been bad but some people will not collect Upper Decks College stuff. Topps put out 10 products that all looked the same, and Panini hasn't produced anything compelling like Masterpieces. Also, around christmas time you may recall that I lost out on a blue /150 for $23. Anyway, $7.65 shipped.

2007 Masterpieces Baseball Cases 5 and 6 - The Numbered Parallels
These are of course my main motivation for busting the 6 cases of masterpieces in the last 6 weeks. Insanity? Surely. You get 2 serialed parallels per box. There are 7 sets other than the 1/1's. Serious Black /99, Black Linen /99, Pinot Red /75, Blue Linen /75, Rusted /50, Hades /50 and finally Blue Steel /50.
There has been much confusion over what version is which. I actually researched paper color to find out the answer for sure. As I have said before, Beckett has Ionised listed as an /50. That is contrary to the Upper Deck Website. In researching the paper colors I determined that the Rusted is actually Rusted Green Metallic, that makes a bit more sense, the blue steel is in fact brighter than the Hades although they are very very close and in the right, or wrong light if you prefer, they look almost identical. Hades is supposed to be darker perhaps as Hades is associated with Black. In some light, the hades does look very dark.
In better news, I am 3 away from the /75 Green Football and Baseball sets.

2 cases 2007 Masterpieces Baseball
These started out well and went way down hill. I don't think I got a case hit auto in the second case. I have 2 box topper sets. $44 shipped each. 26-27 base sets. I didn't quite put together a Linen set but do have a windsor. Pop Startled wanted it so send $45 to stusigpi@hotmail.com. The Uggla is available for $7 delivered, The Lincecum for $110, The Agon is $13 delivered. I have no idea what to put on the Fisk or the Drew plate so make offers if you want..
First, a second expired Jeter Auto Redemption:

Second, a plate of Stephen Drew:

Third, a 1/1 Fisk Jersey. This is the Bronze border with 1 of 1 on the back.

Fourth, a Lincecum auto. This was the only auto of note.
