Well It's finally done

Yesterday while wasting time in the Burbank airport for a same day flight to and from LA I received an email from friend of Joe Collectors everywhere JP.  JP informed me that he had pulled the Robin Yount Blue /50 from some boxes at blowout that were purchased during black friday.  I about came out of my shoes.  The battery on my phone was dying so I started to look for a plug in.  Long story (coming) short we worked out a deal and Yount is on his way.  I will be doing full scans of the set when everything is in order.  I cannot tell you how excited I am for this.  It's silly really but yes I am excited.

I have a case of Masterpieces retail on the way that I got from Blowout....let's hope Chavez is hiding in there.

Nailed it!

Attention Cynical Buddha, Please Report Immediately

So here's the deal, I need Robin Yount Blue /50 to complete the 2008 Masterpieces Baseball Blue /50 set.  I am pretty sure that Cynical Buddha has one.  His list on his Yount Collector Website lists the card as #45 (hades) but I digress.  I have found reference to 2 of these cards on the web, one on Worthpoint and one on his website.  I have been searching for this card for 3 1/2 years. In contrast I have found zero mention of the Eric Chavez Green /75 that I need. I have begged, barrowed, but never stolen to get this set.  I've searched endlessly for this card and cannot find another.

Here's what I would propose to Mr. Buddha.  I will pay handsomely for the card AND should one ever come available on Ebay, I will purchase said card (within reason) and send it to you for free.

Joy of a Completed Set 2008 Upper Deck Masterpieces Football Green /75

I actually completed this set back in January/February of this year but hadn't gotten around to scanning it.  It's a bit of an interesting story on a couple of aspects.  First, as many of you know the last card I needed was the David Tyree.  A common for the most part but, much like the Eric Chavez BB couterpart, exceedingly difficult to find for some reason.  I don't recall seeing one before this one popped up.  I suspect that there might be a case out there full of these things.  Same with the Barry Sanders, I've never actually seen a scan of another. Second, the Tyree came available during the Giants Superbowl run.  It really didn't get a whole lot of interest.  None the less, I haven't seen one since meaning that if there is a rare card you need and it pops up never, grab it while you can.

The Joe Paterno Story thus far

I guess what bothers me most about the Joe Paterno story is the mob mentality that goes along with it. I see a complete lack of analysis and ability to reason. In my career I have seen this over and over again and I go between amused and annoyed. Rarely have I ever gotten mad about a topic, but this is one of them. I suppose what makes me the maddest about this is people that pretend to be reasoned and intelligent make conclusions and comments that are anything but and then accuse me of being the blind one. I've heard terms such as Kiddie toucher and pedophile thrown around in such a way that make it seem like Paterno was the one actually abusing the children. We all know that this is not true. The way that I view this is that people want to blame someone, try to find a way to prevent this again and thus blame everyone connected with it.

The same is true in the Aurora shootings with James Holmes. If you read as many articles as I do daily, there are those that want to ban guns etc, this will not change anything.  The only people that deserve blame in these situations are the offenders themselves. Perhaps in the Penn State situation there were others in the administration whose job, and legally, required them to report this Penn State horror to the police. Make no mistake, Sandusky should be imprisoned for life and those whose job it was to report to the police should be imprisoned as well.

People often refer to the Freeh report and such as proof, but the Freeh report is long on conclusions and short on supporting facts. This is a common mistake in analysis, remember I teach Criminal Law and have worked as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney. I could go on and on about the topic but I have found a very comptetent analysis of the situation already. Keep one thing in mind while reading these articles, are you trying to find excuses to blame Paterno, or anyone for that matter, or are you being objective. Now that some of you are very angry and frothing at the mouth, please read all 3 and point to specific facts when making your argument:

http://www.volokh.com/2012/07/26/ncaa-to-the-taxpayers-of-pennsylvania-drop-dead/

http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2012/07/the-case-against-joe-paterno-weak-to-non-existent-on-the-current-record.php

http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2012/07/the-case-against-joe-paterno-part-two.php

Again, please use facts in supporting your conclusions or you will be publicly mocked. True, Paterno could have done more but that is usually the case with hindsight.

I paid way too much for Ray Rice and Calvin Johnson but the rest weren't bad.  So i've picked up 20 from DA cardworld in the past week, that's a mere 10 cases worth.  Hi, my name is Joe Collector and I've got a problem.  I may check one of these days to see if I have a serial numbered set....now that would be cool.

DACardworld came upon a bunch of these somehow.  This is more than I usually pay but when I don't have to add $3 shipping to all of them, that helps a lot.  To give you an idea I paid $5 shipped for a shockey the other day.  I'm at around 550 of these patches now.

Update on the Frank Thomas "Fake" Patch

BTW, I hate the new Blogger interface.

Recall if you will a post about a Frank Thomas Patch here. Apparently I need to eat a little crow, but my analysis was correct. It's possible to analyze something correctly but end up with the incorrect result.

I received an email:

Joe Collector,

You've bought a number of items on ebay from me in the past (I'm pokeyr22).....I appreciate that. Occassionally I check out your blog, because I'm rooting for you to complete the parallel sets and your blog is well written and entertaining. I just got caught up on the last several months of posts and noticed a card that you spotted as a possible fake - the Frank Thomas Patch/Auto. Well, I can solve the mystery. I pulled that card from a pack when I busted three cases of Masterpieces back when they were $350 a case on blowoutcards.com. I have attached the photo. I just figured that your devotion to the Masterpieces collection deserved the answer to the mystery. It turns out the card is legit - UD must have replaced a ruined patch card with this one, which is why the "PATCH" watermark is missing. I pulled it from a pack and sold it to the guy that was re-selling it.

I have also attached an image of the Evan Longoria Blue /50 that I sold after BGS graded it a 10. Some uber-Longoria collector bought it from me and didn't even care about the BGS grade. I figure the image can be a place-holder for that card until you obtain the real one.

Love your blog. Keep up the good work.

Cheers,

JP

This guy's word is good enough for me.

Yeah, I know I have a problem

But tell me they don't look good:

Picked these up from the Sewing Machine Guy.  He, like many of us, has had a crisis of collecting. I'll keep these around in case he decides he wants these back.  I've done that before. I have bought collections from people and then given them the opportunity to buy them back.

Help @Zistle Out

Listen, I have no idea whether Zistle makes any money but the site is a great resource for collectors regardless.  I've spent the last few hours working out their masterpieces postings the best I can.  What they need are for people to go in and sort through their sets to make sure the checklists are accurate.  If you contact them through twitter they will probably set you up as an "expert" for the sets where you know what you are talking about.

Also if you just have a scanned collection you can follow this tutorial to just drag and drop pics.

I'm Brett Burgundy?

This is one of those cards that you dread as a rare set collector. You just never know when a player collector is going to go to the mat for a card like this. I'm pretty sure card #8 of the set cost me $30 or so. This one cost me $14 shipped. Sanders, Marino and Montana are still out there.....ugh.

I am ridiculously close now....little help?

2011 Leaf Ink Group Break

Ok,I have gotten quite a few requests to do a group break. Looking at the products out there is a bit scary. Base cards, prospect autos.....Let's just say I am skeptical. One product I am not skeptical about is Leaf Ink. Look, most of us are collectors and we want cool things. Cool things include old cards. Cooler things are old cards autod by guys that we would never have a chance to get.

Anyway, Leaf Ink is a cool ass product fo sho. The product is relatively well priced if you look around. So here is the deal. I can do this 1 of 2 ways. I can do a slot break which means you are guaranteed a slabbed card (my preference) or we can do teams. I would tier the teams out but just so you know that the Yanks, Sox, etc would be $100 a team over the course of a case at least. The lesser teams would be $25 or so.

The breakdown is as follows:

Basically 4 slabbed autos and 1 1/1 cut auto.  Each slot in a hit break would be $29 with extra slots being $27.  Paypal to stusigpi@hotmail.com.  Every 5 people that sign up equals a box.  Once I close this out with however many boxes, I will random the slots.  Just so you know the "5" and "0" slots are going to be the 1/1 once I random.  Trading allowed.  Break will be done on Ustream and so will the random.  The random will be done two days before the break.  Signups Close on March 1.

Thoughts or input?  I will not be taking part in this break unless I need to fill in a slot or two at the end.  I am hoping to get a sealed case, hence the 60 slots.

Gary Carter

As everyone knows Gary Carter passed away today.  It's times like these that I can understand the nostalgia of HOF voters when they vote in the heroes of their childhood yet give little credence to players that are their contemporaries in age.

One of those players was Gary Carter.  Gary Carter started with the Expos and then famously played for those 86 mets.  That perm of his always sticks in my mind.  Anyway, the first "big old card" I had as a kid was this one:

This was a huge card to have.  The Rookie Cup.  I knew it wasn't his rookie card but who had that kind of money in those days?  When I look at this card it reminds me how much I hate base topps now.  This card is excellent in every way, todays base is on terrible card stock and cares more about gloss, foil stamping, gimmicks, inserts and crappy hits than just making a fucking baseball card.  But I digress.

Anyway, one new product I gave a thumbs up to is Panini Century Collection.  I still think it is a good value even though Panini and I had a falling out over their current practices and products.  I think it's a good value because it is a different product that offers much more than just the same old same old.

Could you imagine if this was on card?
Photobucket

Regardless it is one of my favorite cards in my collection.

I remember that 76 Topps card, I eventually picked up his rookie. I will never forget those summers. I remember 86 like it was yesterday.  It's sad to see a hero go.  It's sad to know that we aren't children anymore, but all things must change.  So goodbye Mr. Carter, I know that you played baseball for a number of reasons but I can say you simply made my childhood better.

I think I've seen this set before, 2012 Goodwin

Yesterday Fieldlevelview was asking Panini if they had preview info for Crown Royal Hockey.  It told him to just post last year's preview.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Well that cost me $10 more than it should have.

Some time ago I wasn't sure how much certain cards would go for or how much I wanted to pay for that matter.  In addition I wasn't actively collecting this set. Let's back up a minute.

As you all know I employ every tactic known to man to try and complete my Masterpieces parallel sets.  Case busting, message board trolling, internet searches, word of mouth, harassing card show goers, etc.  When COMC came on the scene I was exactly sold on it nor did I know that you could fund an account, buy cards, and then wait to ship them.  As such every purchase I made was an immediate ship so I tried to wait until a lot of cards were listed that I wanted.

At one point I was not actively collecting the Masterpieces Football Burgundy Set  /25.  What kind of a fool would try to put that set together? Anyway, before I started collecting the set, I noticed there was a John Elway Burgundy /25 available for $15 or so.  I waited as there weren't any other cards I was concerned with acquiring on the site.  One day I noticed that the card had been sold.  I was a little bummed but no big deal.  Once I started collecting the Burgundy set, missing out on that card stuck with me.

Well today during one of the free listing days on Ebay Elway Burgundy showed up again for $25 plus shipping.  Of course I had to hit the BIN.

<---corner may be soft
I had to pick it up.  You never know when/if you are going to get a chance.  Plus rare set collecting has no patience.  Of course after missing out on Tom Brady #83 Burgundy and then hitting the BIN for $35 on another one.  A third one shows up on Sunday for a BIN of $30 plus shipping.  Ugh.  So it goes.

Little help?

Currently in the COMC Bucket
