A very new wrinkle in Fakes. Masterpieces Style

I tip my hat to those that are constantly try to find and report on fakes.  Gellman from SCU is one major player that tries to educate.

In doing my normal exhaustive search for Masterpieces I came upon this thread at Freedom Card Board.  Find it here and give these guys credit. <----Enough credit?  It was them that brought this to light.  I'm just going to show what they are talking about.

Ok so basically the question is whether this Frank Thomas is a real Patch/Auto:
The auction is here.  The seller is cheongyoon but may not know or have known it's a fake.  The answer is No it is not.  The auto is probably real, but the patch is not real at all, nor is the serial numbering.  What this card most likely is, is a jersey auto non serial numbered card that has been stamped and reframed.  Consider These:

and by the way, Ebay does not own the copyright on these pictures.  They may think they do, but they don't.They can't usurp the original owner's ownership of the photo if any.
Note the Patch designation that does not appear on the other suspected as a fake. Now consider the jersey and jersey auto below:

Note the spacing between the name and the swatch.  It is bigger on the jersey auto.  Additionally, the back would not contain the authentication language. Also the frames are very easy to remove from one card and put on another.  People use these frames on custom cards all the time. So there you have it.  It could have been a replacement for a ruined patch card during the production process.  What say you?

Sometimes they don't - 2008 Upper Deck Masterpieces Football Green /75 Set Complete

It's all over but the shipping.  I started out to collecting the Masterpieces framed sets for many reasons.  Nobody else was really collecting them, they were cheap, there was nothing else to really collect and of course proof on concept or lack thereof.

I suppose player collectors have been around to some extent since the dawn of collecting cards but manufacturers encouraged set collecting to sell more packs.  There were always short prints, some intentional, some not and some just happened for various reasons.  Think the famous Nap Lojoie Goudey #106 for purposeful.  When we made it to the parallel era, the cards were produced to add value to a box, get people to bust more and to make the release more exciting.

Some of the parallels are just unnecessary from a set collecting perspective as it isn't possible to complete certain sets.  1/1, /5, /10 etc.  I always wondered what was possible with these sets so I gave them a try.

For 2007 Masterpieces Baseball you have 7 1/1 parallels, 3 /50, 2 /75, 2 /99, and 2 unnumbered.  For 2008 Masterpieces Baseball you have a 1/1 set, /5, /10, /25, /50, /75, /100, /125, unnumbered red (probably 275-300 sets), and black. For 2008 Football you have /10 blue, /25 burgundy, /50 green Metallic, /50 Blue, /75 green, /99 brown, /150 Blue,  and /199 Red and unnumbered Black.

What sets the Football sets apart is that the /25, /99, /150, /199 and Black are 86 cards and the others are 105 cards.  Almost a year ago I completed the Blue and the Brown but still had a few to go on the green.

In Fact, as of January 11, 2011 here is my wantlist:
Green /75 need 7 of 105
3 - David Tyree
5 - Barry Sanders
8 - Brett Favre
20 - Devin Hester
43 - Jim Brown
46 - Joe Montana
107 - Desean Jackson
The Favre, Hester Brown, Montana and Jackson all seemed to show up not long after that, but the Tyree/manning and Sanders were very elusive.  I always expected with the coming football seasons that the cards would show up in droves....No luck.  In December I bought that huge lot of cards unseen and sure enough there was a Sanders in there but no Tyree.  I don't recall seeing one listed ever.  I did find one in somebody's collection on Beckett but the person didn't respond to my repeated emails.  There also have been no mentions that any search engine could find.  No mention on Worthpoint, COMC, Sportlots, sportsbuy, et al.

Well yesterday during one of my 200 daily searches, one showed up. 24 hour auction.  I almost emailed the guy to buy it outright but figured there was no need.  Here we are just a day and and $6.69 later I have purchased:

I will say that it is quite a rush when you actually see the card you need listed.  Especially when you have been searching for 3 years.  Now to answer the question that many of you will be thinking.  How much did it cost me to put this set together?  Hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars.  I always get a chuckle when some knuckle head declares that they are going to build one of these sets and then when I warn them of the time and expense, they scoff at me......

Sometimes they cost a lot

The history of the 2008 Upper Deck Masterpieces Football Burgundy /25 set.  I didn't seriously collect this set because I figured that such a thing was impossible.  I had a few of these cards, picked up a couple on ebay, 1 or so per case, sometimes it's 2.  These show up on Ebay and COMC every once in a great while. I had bid on a few like Sayers and Nelson but never really took it seriously. Until I did this. This was the turning point and I decided that I was going to go for the set.  I had noticed that a lot of the cards were being bid up and a single buyer seemed to be getting them.  Finally the guy gave up, windfall for me.  I can't imagine what it cost to track these down singly.  Well maybe I do.

Thing about sets that are /25 or /50 is that you pretty much have to pay whatever it takes but I do have my limits.  Luckily I have picked up a lot of the stars but still have a few to go.  One of those stars was Tom Brady #83 in the set.  I had already picked up Tom Brady #84.  83 showed up the other day for a starting bid of $9 cash money.  I watched it and watched it and watched it.  It finally got an opening bid.  I wasn't worried, happens often on cards I need.

Anyway, I put in a healthy bid with seconds to go thinking $15-$18  or so, nope, went for $32 ish plus ship.  Holy Crap.  Luckily I knew where another one was and picked it up.  Paid a lot more than I wanted to, but meh.

Just a few days later

A few days back I completed my 2007 Upper Deck Masterpieces Pinot /75 set when Chutley magically appeared on COMC.  Last Sunday I noted an auction that appeared that purported to be a Blue Steel Gehrig /50.  So I emailed the seller to find out if it was the brighter blue Blue Steel.  He Claims that it is.  So I offered to buy the card outright.  He probably started looking around for past sales but couldn't find any so decided that he didn't want to get taken so he decided to let it ride. I explained to him that it was the last card I needed for the set.  Probably didn't believe me.  I would have givenn him $10-$15 or so.  Cost me $5.48

So, if this is what he says it is... 2007 Upper Deck Masterpieces Blue Steel /50 Set....Complete.

It's about damn time.

Sometimes I feel like I am cheating when I complete sets using Comc or Ebay, but with 2007 Masterpieces and having busted 26 1/2 cases I don't feel that way at all.  here is why.  You get 5-7 pinots per case.  Even at the low end that is 132 cards minimum.  There are only 90 in the set for pete's sake.

As many of you know I have been collecting these for 3 years. I scour all of the online sources.  I have posted on countless message boards and you know I don't low ball people.  Well maybe in the beginning, but let's be honest.  Offering .75-1.25 for a card that is of a no name parallel these days is not low ball really.

Anyway, I have been down to Chase Utley #33 for a long time.  Not a big dollar card, not a high demand card.  In fact there have been no less than 10 of the Deep Blue Linen /75 counterpart on ebay.  Well tonight I was doing one of my hourly searches on Comc when this showed up for $3.

It's funny how this works.  All of the cards I need with the exception of 5 I have never seen on ebay.  One I screwed up bidding, and 4 went for way more than a half way sane person would pay.  I know someone has these cards somewhere.  Any help?
